The Giant Squid was a creature that lived in the Hogwarts Lake. Despite the generalised fear of it, the Giant Squid was actually very docile and helpful to the students of Hogwarts, such as when Dennis Creevey fell into the Lake, and he was immediately picked up by one of the squid's tentacles and put safely back in the boat. This squid is also known to have played with students, such as when Fred Weasley, George Weasley and Lee Jordan tickled its tentacles as it was lying part way out of the lake, and to have accepted food from students, such as when he received toast from Hermione Granger. During the Triwizard Tournament, when watching Krum bathing in the lake, Ron says it would freeze him to death to bathe in the lake in winter, to which Hermione replies it would be rather warm, compared to the lands from which he comes. Ron replies hopefully; "There's still the Squid". Ron Weasley seems to think that the squid is dangerous to those at Hogwarts it comes into contact with, such as hoping that Viktor Krum is killed by the squid, and thinking that Tom Riddle might have received his Special Award for Services to the School from saving a teacher from the giant squid. Needless to say, the squid does not seem to be a threat to the students, as it has multiple chances to kill any specific student, but hasn't, and even has saved students.

  • J. K. Rowling once joked that the Squid is Godric Gryffindor, one of the four founders of Hogwarts. This would make it the world's largest Animagus. On the eleventh hour of every evening, The Squid would rise from the lake and transform into Gryffindor, who would wander the school grounds before returning at sunrise. This cannot be considered canon, however, because Rowling was trying to make a point sarcastically.
