A Hit Wizard or Hit Witch is a highly trained member of the Magical Law Enforcement Squad, tasked with arresting dangerous criminals. A team of Hit Wizards arrested Sirius Black in 1981 when he was thought to have murdered Peter Pettigrew and twelve Muggles.[1]

Entry requirements are five O.W.L.s including Defence Against the Dark Arts. Applicants for the job must be over the age of seventeen. Once accepted, they are taught defensive charms and counter-curses, and how to restrain criminals without attracting the attention of Muggles. Hit Wizards start on a salary of seven hundred Galleons a month, are provided with a broomstick and have a bed reserved at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.[2]

Behind the scenes

  • It is unknown how Hit Wizards are different than Aurors, as both their duties include hunting down dangerous criminals.
  • One possible difference may be similar to the difference between the Muggle Police and the Muggle Military. Alternatively, the difference could be similar to the roles of elite paramilitary units (e.g. SWAT) compared with a national criminal investigative bodies (e.g. FBI) as well as elite military units (e.g. Navy SEALs, Delta Force, SAS).
