Encounters with Hippogriffs
Harry Potter's first encounter with a Hippogriff is in September 1993, when Hagrid gathered several of them to show to his Care of Magical Creatures Class. In this class, Harry gains the approval of the hippogriff Buckbeak and is allowed to ride him. When he comes back down to the ground, the rest of the class attempts to do the same with the other hippogriffs. Draco Malfoy, who has not paid any attention to the lesson, insults Buckbeak, which earns him a gash on the arm and a trip to the hospital wing.
