A Hex is a spell that is less dark than a curse and darker than a jinx. Hexes cause a certain degree of pain and discomfort. Hexes are considered by some as a minor kind of Dark Magic, but they can also be used for protection by distracting people or creatures. For instance, in 1995, Ginny Weasley made the mere mention of Garrotting Gas in a Hogwarts hallway and it was enough to keep students from going in that direction. In 1992, Ron tried to hex Draco Malfoy for calling Hermione a "mudblood". The spell backfired due to Ron's broken wand and Ron was hit with the hex. Although there is no class that teaches Hexes, one can assume that students learn it from each other, much like Muggles learn a variety of things, not taught by their teachers or parents, but, perhaps, siblings.

Stinging jinx1

Hermione casting a Stinging Hex on Harry Potter in 1998

A hex is one of the seven known spell types. They are affiliated with Dark Magic, darker than a jinx but not as dark as a curse[1], and generally causes moderate suffering to the victim.

Usage

Hexes can be used in a defensive capacity. For instance, in 1996, Ginny Weasley gained a reputation for being an accomplished caster of the Bat-Bogey Hex after using it to free herself from Dolores Umbridge's Inquisitorial Squad and also for casting it on someone from her carriage on the Hogwarts Express.[2]

List of Known Hexes

Etymology

The word "hex" may derive from Pensylvania German hexe meaning "to practice witchcraft" or German hexen "to hex"[3], a meaning that the word still retains today when used as a verb. Its usage as a noun in contemporary English may refer to "a magic spell" or "a charm" and usually carries an connotation of ill will (though it used to refer to a an evil witch—such as a Hag—as well)[3][4].

Behind the scenes

 • Although there is no known class that teaches, it is probable that—if they are taught—they are included in the Defence Against the Dark Arts syllabus. It is also highly likely that students learn them from each other.
 • A Hex-Breaker can counter the effects of these types of spells. Probably, there are also counter-hexes.
