A Hex is a spell that is less dark than a curse and darker than a jinx. Hexes cause a certain degree of pain and discomfort. Hexes are considered by some as a minor kind of Dark Magic, but they can also be used for protection by distracting people or creatures. For instance, in 1995, Ginny Weasley made the mere mention of Garrotting Gas in a Hogwarts hallway and it was enough to keep students from going in that direction. In 1992, Ron tried to hex Draco Malfoy for calling Hermione a "mudblood". The spell backfired due to Ron's broken wand and Ron was hit with the hex. Although there is no class that teaches Hexes, one can assume that students learn it from each other, much like Muggles learn a variety of things, not taught by their teachers or parents, but, perhaps, siblings.
