This film is the only one of the series for which Steve Kloves did not write the screenplay. When asked why he turned it down, he said "You know, I don’t even know why. The fourth film, Goblet of Fire, was really hard to do. I wrote on it for two years. But it’s not that simple and I don’t know that I’ll ever fully understand why I didn’t do it. This will sound glib, but it’s somewhat true: They asked me on the wrong day."

The film grossed $941 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2007 (behind Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End) and the sixth highest-grossing film of all time at the time (behind Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, The Philosopher's Stone and At World's End).

After witnessing Cedric Diggory's death, Harry Potter is worried that things could get worse. As he and his cousin Dudley are walking home from the park they are attacked by Dementors and Harry casts a Patronus Charm to save them both from the Dementor's Kiss. An extremely baffled Dudley is taken back to Privet Drive accompanied by Mrs. Figg. A Howler from Mafalda Hopkirk of the Ministry of Magic|Ministry arrives for Harry and tells him he is expelled from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for using magic in front of a Muggle. The Order of the Phoenix comes and rescues Harry and then takes him to 12 Grimmauld Place to stay, where he finds out that Hermione and Ron's family is there, too. Harry also has many nightmares about the events that had happened the previous year, including the death of Cedric Diggory and the rejuvenation of Voldemort. While at 12 Grimmauld Place, Harry's godfather Sirius Black mentions that Voldemort is after "something he didn't have last time." Then he finds out about the Order of the Phoenix organisation, which consists of Sirius Black, Severus Snape, Mr. Weasley, Mrs. Weasley, Professor Lupin, Tonks, Professor Moody, and many others. At the Ministry, Dumbledore defends Harry's actions. The Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge denies Harry's answer to his question, regarding what actually took place on the night in question, leading to further arguments. In the end Harry is cleared of all charges. Because Dumbledore reminds them that, expelling him from the school of using a charm to defend them against the dementors. It is not forbidden to use magic when you are under age if it is a matter of life or death.

In the wake of Cedric Diggory's death and Lord Voldemort's return, Harry Potter is worried that things could get worse. As he and his cousin Dudley are walking home from the park (following Dudley's antagonising Harry in front of his friends), they are attacked by Dementors (secretly sent by Dolores Umbridge) and Harry casts a Patronus Charm to save them both from the Dementor's Kiss. An extremely baffled Dudley is taken back to Privet Drive accompanied by Mrs Figg, a squib who is a neighbour of Harry and was told by Dumbledore to keep an eye on him. Later, a Howler from Mafalda Hopkirk of the Ministry arrives for Harry and tells him he is expelled from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for using magic in front of a Muggle.

The Order of the Phoenix comes and collects Harry while Alastor Moody reveals that Dumbledore ordered his expulsion order suspended in favour of a disciplinary hearing. The Order flies him to 12 Grimmauld Place to stay, where he finds out that Hermione and Ron's family are there, too. Harry also has many nightmares about the events that had happened the previous year, including the death of Cedric Diggory and the rejuvenation of Voldemort. While at 12 Grimmauld Place, Harry's godfather Sirius Black mentions that Voldemort is after "something he didn't have last time." Around this time Harry also learns about the Order of the Phoenix, an organisation of which Sirius Black, Severus Snape, Mr and Mrs Weasley, Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, Professor Moody, and many others are all members.

At the Ministry, Dumbledore defends Harry's actions. The Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge denies Harry's answer to his question, regarding what actually took place on the night in question, leading to further arguments. Mrs Figg gives testimony as a witness of the event. Dumbledore tells Fudge that Voldemort could be behind the Dementor attack, but Fudge refuses to believe that Voldemort is back. In the end, Harry is cleared of all charges, because Dumbledore reminds them that, expelling him from the school for using a charm to defend himself against Dementors is unjustifiable, as it is not forbidden for even an underage wizard to use magic in a matter of life or death.

Shortly after Harry, Ron, and Hermione arrive at Hogwarts they find out that the sinister and mean-spirited Dolores Umbridge is the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. It is apparent that she is there as a puppet of the Ministry of Magic in their way of interfering at Hogwarts and keeping rumours about Lord Voldemort's return from spreading. When Harry insists that Voldemort's return is not a lie and that he saw him, Umbridge gives him detention (which consists of making him write "I must not tell lies" repeatedly with a special quill that takes the writing out of his hand, writing it in blood). This proves to be the beginning of Dolores Umbridge's abuses of power as the Ministry of Magic's "high inquisitor"; she introduces restriction after restriction, as well as "evaluating" teachers to determine if they're worthy of remaining at Hogwarts. This leads to her sacking Professor Trelawney, but she is stopped from throwing her out of Hogwarts altogether by Professor Dumbledore, who tells Professor McGonagall to escort Trelawney back inside. When Umbridge begins to argue about his actions, Dumbledore tells her that she has the right to sack teachers but not to banish them from the grounds. At the same time, Dumbledore distances himself from Harry, knowing that Harry's mind is connected to Voldemort and can see visions of Voldemort when he gets a big emotional charge such as happiness or anger.

In the face of Umbridge's corruption, refusal to actually teach Hogwarts students anything worthwhile in Defence Against the Dark Arts, and the Ministry of Magic's continued denial of Voldemort's return, the trio, along with many other Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff students, band together to form a group that comes to be known as "Dumbledore's Army" in honour of the headmaster (who is presently on the receiving end of a smear campaign against him due to his insistence that Voldemort really has returned). The DA members decide to find a secret place in the castle where all willing students can come and learn. Neville Longbottom finds the Room of Requirement, a hidden room in Hogwarts that gives those inside things they need. The group decides that Harry will be their new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. The students use the room to train, and Harry begins a relationship with Cho Chang. Under the assumption that Dumbledore's Army is an organisation formed to undermine the Ministry, as High Inquisitor, Umbridge bans most student activities, and forbids any groups, societies, etc., of more than 3 people to continue unless given permission; essentially revoking all student freedom.

Harry has a vision of an attack on Arthur Weasley in the Department of Mysteries, saving his life. At Christmas, Harry confides in Sirius about how he is feeling and how he feels Voldemort inside of him. Afterwards, Dumbledore instructs Snape to give him Occlumency lessons in order to block his mind from Voldemort's influence. The Occlumency lessons causes Harry to begin distancing himself from his friends. Simultaneously, Sirius's deranged cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange, escapes from Azkaban prison along with nine other convicted Death Eaters.

Umbridge, who had taken many of the acquaintances of Harry into questioning, finds out about how to get in the Room of Requirement through Cho Chang, whom she had illegally used Veritaserum on, and the Inquisitorial Squad (consisting of Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe, Gregory Goyle, Pansy Parkinson, and a few others from Slytherin) break in. They take Harry and Cho to Dumbledore’s office and the Minister, along with a few others from the Ministry arrive. Dumbledore takes the full blame for the organisation, since, after all, it was called "Dumbledore’s Army". When they attempt to take him to Azkaban, Dumbledore escapes with Fawkes, his phoenix. After this, Umbridge becomes Headmistress and punishes Dumbledore's army with a blood quill detention.
As they arrive at Hogwarts they find out that Dolores Umbridge is the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. She gives false information such as denying Lord Voldemort's return. When Harry tries to say that Voldemort has returned, she gives him detention and makes him write "I must not tell lies". She gives him a quill that engraves the words into his left hand. She later tries to sack Professor Trelawney, but is stopped by Professor McGonagall and Dumbledore. At the same time, Dumbledore distances himself from Harry, knowing that Harry's mind is connected to Voldemort and can see visions of Voldemort when he gets a big emotionally charge like happines or anger. Later on, Umbridge becomes the new headmaster, thus kicking Dumbledore out of his position and attempting to send him to Azkaban, which fails. Under the assumption that Dumbledore's Army is an organisation formed to undermine the Ministry. As headmistress, Umbridge bans many student activities and basically revokes student freedom. You can get the activities back if umbridge allows you to have a group bigger than 3 persons. The trio, along with many other Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff students, despise Umbridge very much, and realise that with Umbridge constantly watching them, they cannot get any learning of Defence Against the Dark Arts, and prepare themselves for the real world, the war against Voldemort and his Death Eathers. Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide to find a secret place in the castle where all willing students can come and learn of the Dark Arts defence. Neville Longbottom finds the Room of Requirement. They decide that Harry will be their new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. The students use the room to train for Dumbledore's Army, which is later found out by Umbridge (who had taken many of the acquaintances of Harry into questioning, and had illegally used Veritaserum on Cho (This isn't actually correct according to the books, but in the film they did it this way), who then revealed the Room of Requirement) and the Inquisitorial Squad (consisting of Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe, Gregory Goyle, Pansy Parkinson, and a few others).

Harry has a vision of an attack on Arthur Weasley in the Department of Mysteries, and Dumbledore instructs Snape to give him Occlumency lessons in order to block his mind from Voldemort's influence. During the lesson, Harry is able to penetrate Snape's mind and see all his memories, including one where James Potter and Sirius Black, in their adolescence, are bullying Snape, and he sees why Snape despises his father so much. Harry, in turn, agrees that his father was acting in a behavior that Harry was not proud of. The Occlumency lessons causes Harry to push all his friends away from him. {C

Later, during Harry's next Occlumency lesson, an exasperated Harry, tired of Snape's unwanted intrusions in his mind along with his carping and insults, angrily casts a shield charm and penetrates Snape's mind, in so doing seeing several of his most traumatic memories, including one where James Potter and Sirius Black, in their adolescence, bullied Snape relentlessly. Livid at the intrusion, Snape refuses to keep teaching Harry Occlumency, ordering him out.
Along with nine other Death Eaters, Sirius's deranged cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange, escapes from Azkaban prison.

During an exam, the Weasley twins (who dropped out of school to pursue a career as prank shop owners) revolt and set off fireworks in the Great Hall, causing chaos for Umbridge, but all the students except Slytherin are happy, including Professor Filius Flitwick. During this event, Harry has a vision of Sirius being tortured by Voldemort within the Department of Mysteries. Hermione points out that Voldemort may be only tricking him to lure him into his grasp, but Harry retaliates by saying that he is Harry's only family left. Harry, Ron, and Hermione rush to Umbridge's fireplace to alert the Order via the Floo Network, but Umbridge and the Inquisitorial Squad stops them before they can do so. When she threatens to use the Cruciatus Curse to get information out of Harry about the trio's intentions, Hermione deceives Umbridge into entering the Forbidden Forest in search for Dumbledore's "secret weapon". She and Harry lead her to the hiding place of Hagrid's half-giant brother, Grawp, only to be confronted by centaurs who kidnap Umbridge after she attacks them. Harry, Hermione, Ron, Luna, Neville and Ginny fly to the Ministry of Magic on Thestrals in an attempt to save Sirius. Which was a little shock for Neville, Ginny, Hermione and Ron, because Thestrals only can be seen by people who have witnessed death.

During an examination, the Weasley twins revolt and set off assorted fireworks in the Great Hall, causing chaos for Umbridge and destroying many of her oppressive decrees. At the end of this event, the twins leave Hogwarts to great celebration and jubilation from both the student body and even some of the teachers, nearly all of whom have grown to despise the pompous and sadistic Umbridge. Following the departure of the twins, Harry has a vision of Sirius being tortured by Voldemort within the Department of Mysteries. Hermione points out that Voldemort may only be tricking him to lure him into his grasp, but Harry retaliates by saying that Sirius is his only family left. Harry, Ron, and Hermione rush to Umbridge's fireplace to alert the Order via the Floo Network, and Harry expresses a desire to go to the Ministry alone directly from there, but Umbridge and the Inquisitorial Squad stop them before they can do so. At first, Umbridge tries to get Snape to use more Veritaserum on Harry to force the truth out of him, but Snape calmly informs her that she already used the last of it on Cho Chang. He then departs, seemingly ignoring a coded warning that Harry sends to him. Fuming, Umbridge threatens to use the Cruciatus Curse to get information out of Harry about the trio's intentions. Harry and Hermione then deceive Umbridge into entering the Forbidden Forest in search for Dumbledore's "secret weapon". She and Harry lead her to the hiding place of Hagrid's half-giant brother, Grawp, only to be confronted by centaurs who snatch Umbridge after she insults and tries to attack them. Umbridge begs Harry for help but he replies "I'm sorry professor. But I must not tell lies." The Centaurs then drag a horrified Umbridge off into the woods.

Afterwards, the trio, Neville Longbottom, Luna Lovegood and Ginny Weasley head to the Ministry of Magic, where they go to the Department of Mysteries and look for the prophecy of Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. However, many Death Eaters, including Lucius Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange ambush them. Lucius says that "you only saw what he wanted you to see", confirming Hermione's hunch. A short battle ensues, and the Death Eaters take hold of everyone but Harry, threatening to kill them if he does not surrender the prophecy. Harry proceeds to hand the prophecy over to Lucius, but is interrupted when Order members (Sirius Black, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, and Alastor Moody) arrive to defeat the Death Eaters. In the midst of the battle, Lucius drops the prophecy. Shortly after Sirius disarms Lucius, Bellatrix strikes him with the Avada Kedavra curse. Devastated and infuriated, Harry chases Bellatrix out to the Atrium and attempts to torture her with the Cruciatus Curse, but fails due to not possessing real cruelty, despite Voldemort's urges. Voldemort appears to finish him off, but Dumbledore arrives via the Floo Network to save Harry. A short battle ensues between Voldemort and Dumbledore, and Bellatrix escapes. Dumbledore overpowers Voldemort, and Voldemort attempts to possess Harry, but Harry manages to overcome his powers due to Harry's love for his friends, and claims that Voldemort is the weak one; Voldemort will never feel true love or friendship. Just as Voldemort Disapparates, Ministry officials arrive and Cornelius Fudge is forced to admit that the Dark Lord is indeed back in power. He resigns as Minister. Voldemort sends Lucius Malfoy to Azkaban in revenge for not successfully retrieving the prophecy. As Dumbledore's Army and Dumbledore return to Hogwarts and Dumbledore is reinstated as headmaster, Dumbledore and Harry discuss the prophecy, and Harry discovers that in the end, only one can live, and that he and Voldemort are destined to fight each other.

After escaping Umbridge, Harry and Hermione meet up with Ron, Luna Lovegood, Neville, and Ginny Weasley, who managed to escape the Inquisitoral Squad. They fly to the Ministry of Magic on Thestrals in an attempt to save Sirius. They go looking for him in the Department of Mysteries. After many failures to locate the Hall of Prophecies, they come across the prophecy of Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. Just then, many Death Eaters, including Lucius Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange, ambush them after Harry touches the prophecy. Lucius says that "you only saw what he wanted you to see", confirming Hermione's earlier hunch. A short battle ensues, and the Death Eaters take hold of everyone but Harry, threatening to kill them if he does not surrender the prophecy. Harry proceeds to hand the prophecy over to Lucius, but is interrupted when Order members Sirius Black, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, and Alastor Moody, all of whom had earlier been warned by Snape, arrive to defeat the Death Eaters. In the midst of the battle, Sirius punches Lucius, causing him to drop the prophecy. Shortly after Lucius is defeated, Bellatrix strikes him with the Killing Curse, killing him by sending him through the veil.

  +
Devastated and infuriated, Harry chases Bellatrix out to the Atrium and hits her with the Cruciatus Curse, downing her. Voldemort's voice whispers in Harry's ear, urging him to give into his hatred of Bellatrix and kill her, but Harry, realising that Voldemort is baiting him, turns to confront him. Voldemort expresses contempt for Harry's "weakness" and tries to kill him, just as Dumbledore arrives via the Floo Network to save Harry. A short but intense battle ensues between Voldemort and Dumbledore, and Bellatrix escapes in the chaos. Dumbledore successfully counters all of Voldemort's best efforts to hurt him and Harry without sustaining a single injury on him and at one point even nearly defeats him by trapping him in water, and after his most powerful series of attacks, that of an extremely destructive torrent of dark energy, which did no effect but to knock Dumbledore off his feet harmlessly, and then countless shards of glass that he fired at Dumbledore, were countered ultimately with little strain on Dumbledore's effort, who stood back up shortly afterwards prepared to continue fighting, the Dark Lord switches tactics by attempting to possess Harry, who manages to overcome his efforts due to Harry's love for his friends and Sirius, as he does defiantly saying that Voldemort is the weak one, as he will never feel true love or friendship. Voldemort exits Harry's body and coldly tells him that he will lose everything. When the Ministry officials arrive, Voldemort disapparates in an attempt to escape unnoticed, but does not succeed; the Ministry officials are able to catch a glimpse of him and Cornelius Fudge is forced to admit that the Dark Lord is indeed back in power and resigns as minister in disgrace. Umbridge is fired from Hogwarts, Lucius Malfoy and the other Death Eaters that participated are sent to Azkaban, and Dumbledore is reinstated as headmaster.

Upon their return, Dumbledore and Harry discuss the prophecy, and Harry discovers that in the end, only one can live, and that he and Voldemort are destined to fight each other one last time. Though this revelation is sobering, Harry ends his school year standing by his friends, optimistic about the future because he knows that they have something Voldemort does not: something worth fighting for.

This causes excitement from the rest of the group. However, when they are seen casting spells at the model Death Eater, Neville produces a very good Disarming Charm that knocks the model across the room. Neville was probably trying to disarm it not send it flying.

*Dudley's gang of friends is with him when Harry confronts Dudley. In the book, they had left to go home, so Dudley and Harry are alone. In the video-game adaptation, Harry speaks to Dudley after hearing everyone of Dudley's gang saying goodbye to Dudley.

In the video-game adaptation, Harry speaks to Dudley after hearing every one of Dudley's gang saying goodbye to Dudley.
  +
*In the book, Dudley is stated to have worn a leather jacket. The film omits this and has Dudley simply wearing a summer outfit with shorter trousers and a T-shirt.
*The scene with Mundungus Fletcher in Privet Drive is omitted, due to Mundungus's omission from the film.

  +
*The book also claims that Dudley had smoked cigarettes on street corners. As it would be illegal for Harry Melling to have smoked during the film's production, nor would it be healthy for this to have happened, this is omitted from the film and there is no reference to it.
  +
*The scene with Mundungus Fletcher in Privet Drive is omitted, due to Mundungus's omission from the film.
  +
*Harry having received Sirius's letters is omitted from the film, and therefore are never shown to be in Harry's possession at the Dursley home.

*In the book, Harry and Dudley are attacked by Dementors in an alleyway in Little Whinging, while in the film, they are attacked in an underpass.

*In the book, after Harry explains how Dudley was attacked by a Dementor, and Vernon asks what that is, Petunia blurts out the explanation, leading both Harry and Vernon to wonder how she knows this. This is nowhere in evidence in the film, and some plot points in Deathly Hallows may be confusing if filmed as a result.

*Harry Potter's explanation to the Dursleys of the Dementor is omitted. Instead, he just sits at the kitchen counter silently while Uncle Vernon lectures him about what he did to Dudley.
  +
*In the book, Harry receives several letters:
  +
**The first one was from Mafalda Hopkirk about using magic in front of a Muggle and being expelled from Hogwarts, that he'll attend a hearing and and that his wand would be destroyed shortly by Ministry representatives (note: the letter doesn't speak out loud in the book, so the Dursleys don't know what it says until Harry tells them).
  +
**The second one was from Arthur Weasley telling Harry that Dumbledore arrived at the Ministry and is trying to sort everything out and to not leave his aunt and uncle's house, to not do anymore magic and not to surrender his wand.
  +
**The third one was a second letter from Mafalda Hopkirk telling Harry that the Ministry had instead decided Harry may retain his wand until his hearing, at which time an official decision would be taken and that the Ministry has agreed that the question of his expulsion would also be decided at that time and he should therefore consider himself suspended from school pending further inquiries.
  +
**The fourth one was a letter from Sirius Black saying that Arthur Weasley informed him (Sirius) and everyone else what had happened and that whatever Harry does, he should not leave the house.
  +
**Petunia also receives a howler from Albus Dumbledore telling her to "remember his last" which means that his previous letter he sent her 14 years ago.
  +
*In the film, only Mafalda Hopkirk's first letter is sent to Harry. All of the other letters and the Howler are omitted, although the contents of Arthur Weasley’s letter and Mafalda Hopkirk’s second letter are relayed to Harry by Kingsley Shacklebolt when he and the rest of the Advance Guard prepare to leave Privet Drive with Harry this way: “Dumbledore has persuaded the minister (contents of Arthur Weasley’s letter) to suspend your expulsion pending a formal hearing (contents of Mafalda Hopkirk’s second letter)”.
  +
*In the novel, it is said Harry cast the Patronus Charm at 9:23 p.m., but in the film, it is said he cast the charm at 6:23 p.m.

*Nymphadora Tonks's name is only mentioned twice in the film, both times by Alastor Moody. Also, she does not appear to have a close relationship with Harry Potter as she did in the books. They don't directly talk to each other. Although, she winks at Harry as she walks by him upon arriving at Grimmauld Place.

The Dursleys leave the house and likely take Dudley (with a blanket over his head) to a hospital as Aunt Petunia mentioned before.

He mentions saving the Philosopher's Stone, killing the Basilisk, fighting the dementors in the third year, getting through the maze, and fighting off Voldemort. *Nymphadora Tonks changes her hair into violet, bubblegum pink, tomato-red, grey and blonde. Also, in the book, her main colour of hair is bubble-gum pink, but in the film it is switched to purple and it stays that way throughout the film. However when Harry is picked up from the Dursleys, Moody calls her Nymphadora and as she angrily tells him not to do that, her hair turns red briefly, but then their brooms arrive and her hair turns back to purple again. This suggests in the film, her hair changes colour when she is feeling a particuarly strong emotion. However, at 12 Grimmauld Place, she changes her nose to a pig's snout.

*The scene where Umbridge tells Harry to give McGonagall the note about his behavior in class is omitted and so is the rest.

  +
*In the book, Umbridge's first class takes place in the afternoon, but in the film, it takes place in the morning. Also, due to this change, Umbridge is already in the classroom seated behind the teacher's desk in the novel, but in the film she enters the classroom after destroying a flying paper bird and also her telling the class to reply "Good morning, Professor Umbridge" (in this case) is omitted.
  +
*In the novel, the textbook the students use is called Defensive Magical Theory (written by Wilbert Slinkhard), but in the film, the textbooks are called Dark Arts Defence: Basics for Beginners. Also, in the novel, the film's book title "Basics for Beginners" is the name of Chapter 1 which Umbridge requires the students to read.
  +
*The class reading their textbooks is omitted from the film.
  +
*Also, in the novel, Umbridge asks the students whether they all have a copy of the textbook they need (Defensive Magical Theory), they don't reply 'yes' or 'no', to which Umbridge wants them to reply "Yes, Professor Umbridge" or "No, Professor Umbridge", to which she tries again and the students answer "Yes, Professor Umbridge". This is omitted from the film, as it is different: The textbooks are located as a pile on the class's front desk and Umbridge levitates them to every student at each desk.
  +
*Also, in the film, the arguments between Umbridge, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dean Thomas and Parvati Patil in class are shorter than in the book:
  +
**Hermione only briefly argues about the textbook having nothing about using defensive spells while her other argument lines are omitted.
  +
**Ron says his exact line from the book "We're not gonna use magic?" but is not told by Umbridge that students will raise their hands when they wish to speak in her class and she does not call him 'Mr' until Ron says "Weasley." The bit about students raising their hands if they'd like to speak in Umbridge's class is instead said to Harry.
  +
**Dean Thomas does not argue at all, thus omitting his defence of Remus Lupin being called a "dangerous half-breed" and his words about Barty Crouch Jnr being a maniac but learnt loads.
  +
**Like Dean Thomas, Parvati Patil does not argue at all either, thus omitting her questioning about what will happen during the exams.
  +
**Harry argues about Lord Voldemort having returned and about the class not going to be risk-free, but does not stand up from his seat when he talks about Cedric Diggory.
  +

In the book however the Daily Prophet that was released after the incident did not mention anything about Fudge's possible resignation and it wasn't until the following book that would reveal that Fudge had lost his job as the Minister for Magic after the incident.

  +
*In the film, Dumbledore doesn't explain the prophecy to Harry. This also includes the details that the prophecy could refer to either Neville or Harry, that it was because of the prophecy that Voldemort killed Harry's parents, and that Voldemort had gained knowledge of part of the prophecy shortly after it was made, which is the reason he was so desperate to have possession of it, in order to hear it entirely so he could find out how to destroy Harry.
*In the book, Harry Potter loses his temper with Dumbledore after Sirius Black's death and smashes his possessions, which did not happen in the film.

  +
*In the film, Harry never learns that it is Sybill Trelawney who made the prophecy, since Dumbledore never shows Harry his memory of being told the prophecy. Whereas in the film, Harry hears the prophecy come out of its orb as soon as he touches it in the Hall of Prophecy. The prophecy does, however, speak in Trelawney's voice.
*In the novels, Harry finds out about the condition of Neville's parents from Albus Dumbledore significantly before Neville's other friends learn of it. In the film, Sirius tells Harry how they suffered a fate worse then death, and Neville later tells Harry more in the Room of Requirement.

  +
*In the film, Dumbledore's explanation of the prophecy is diminished to just one word, when he confirms to Harry that either he or Voldemort will have to kill the other. He doesn't explain the prophecy could refer to either Neville or Harry, that it was because of the prophecy that Voldemort killed Harry's parents, or that Voldemort had gained knowledge of part of the prophecy shortly after it was made and the reason he so desperately wanted to have possession of it was to hear it entirely, so that he could find out how to destroy Harry.

*In the film, Harry never learns that it is Sybill Trelawney who made the prophecy, in fact the scene where Dumbledore shows Harry his memory of being told the prophecy in the Pensieve is omitted. Whereas in the film, Harry hears the prophecy come out of its orb as soon as he touches it in the Hall of Prophecy. The prophecy does, however, speak in Trelawney's voice.

However, the scene was filmed, and the mirror is present in the film version of F1, implied to have been given to Harry offscreen as part of Sirius Black's will.
*Nearly Headless Nick is omitted and the important part where he explained to Harry that not all wizards can come back as ghosts. *No ghosts appear in the film, so Harry never questions Nearly Headless Nick about ghosts.
*In the novel, Luna tells Harry that her mother died when she was 9 years old when Harry finds her pinning up notices of her lost things, but in the film, she tells him about her mother's death in the Forbidden Forest where she also tells him about Thestrals.

"The Rebellion Begins"
— Official tagline

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is a British-American fantasy film based on the fifth novel by J. K. Rowling, released on 11 July 2007 in the U.S. and 12 July 2007 in the UK. David Yates made his directorial debut for the series, as did Michael Goldenberg for writing and David Barron for producing, while David Heyman returned from the first four films to produce. Reprising their roles from the previous films are Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Brendan Gleeson, Richard Griffiths, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Fiona Shaw, Maggie Smith, David Thewlis, Emma Thompson, David Bradley, Warwick Davis, Tom Felton, Robert Hardy, Julie Walters and Mark Williams, while Helena Bonham Carter, Imelda Staunton, George Harris and Natalia Tena make their debut for the series.

This will sound glib, but it’s somewhat true: They asked me on the wrong day."[1]

Plot

Mistakes

  • When Harry and Mr Weasley are going on the Underground, Mr Weasley tries to get through without his ticket. You can see Harry pulling his ticket out of his pocket when the camera is behind them. When the camera goes in front of them, Harry puts his hand in his pocket again. The camera goes behind them - and Harry pulls his ticket out another time.
  • When the Dursleys bring the ill Dudley out and into the car, the flowers behind them are large and white. Later, when the Advance Guard leave with Harry, the flowers are small and red.
  • When Harry and Mr Weasley are about to enter the Ministry of Magic (telephone booth), the pavement they walk on is dry but when they are in the telephone booth, they show the same pavement which now has a puddle on it.
  • When Dudley bullies Harry, his shorts have a bunch of strange designs. When the Dementors are about to come, Dudley's short's designs change completely.
  • During the Underground scene, you can see a man to the left of Mr Weasley pass by twice.
  • In the thestral scene, Luna is clearly stated in bare feet, however, she is later seen wearing white trainers, then she is barefoot again.
  • When Harry has his first nightmare that is seen, during the nightmare he is wearing a light blue T-shirt. However, when he wakes up and sees Ron, he is wearing a dark blue polo top with a button on the collar.
  • During the D.A. montage it is made a clear point that Neville cannot produce a Disarming Charm. Then at the end of the scene Neville is seen knocking a wand out of Parvati Patil's hand. This causes excitement from the rest of the group. However, when they are seen casting spells at the model Death Eater, Neville produces a very good Disarming Charm that knocks the model across the room. Neville was probably trying to disarm it not send it flying.
  • During the O.W.L.s, when Umbridge walks to the door, she walks past Harry, and then Neville. However, in the next scene, Neville is shown to be sitting in front of Harry.
  • Both of the Patil twins are seen as Gryffindors, despite the fact that one of them, Padma, is a Ravenclaw.

Differences from the book

1. Dudley Demented

  • In the film, Dudley's gang of friends is with him when Harry confronts Dudley. In the book, they had left to go home, so Dudley and Harry are alone. In the video-game adaptation, Harry speaks to Dudley after hearing every one of Dudley's gang saying goodbye to Dudley.
  • In the book, Dudley is stated to have worn a leather jacket. The film omits this and has Dudley simply wearing a summer outfit with shorter trousers and a T-shirt.
  • The book also claims that Dudley had smoked cigarettes on street corners. As it would be illegal for Harry Melling to have smoked during the film's production, nor would it be healthy for this to have happened, this is omitted from the film and there is no reference to it.
  • The scene with Mundungus Fletcher in Privet Drive is omitted, due to Mundungus's omission from the film.
  • Harry having received Sirius's letters is omitted from the film, and therefore are never shown to be in Harry's possession at the Dursley home.
  • In the book, Harry and Dudley are attacked by Dementors in an alleyway in Little Whinging, while in the film, they are attacked in an underpass.

2. A Peck of Owls

  • In the book, after Harry explains how Dudley was attacked by a Dementor, and Vernon asks what that is, Petunia blurts out the explanation, leading both Harry and Vernon to wonder how she knows this. This is nowhere in evidence in the film, and some plot points in Deathly Hallows may be confusing if filmed as a result.
  • Harry Potter's explanation to the Dursleys of the Dementor is omitted. Instead, he just sits at the kitchen counter silently while Uncle Vernon lectures him about what he did to Dudley.
  • In the book, Harry receives several letters:
    • The first one was from Mafalda Hopkirk about using magic in front of a Muggle and being expelled from Hogwarts, that he'll attend a hearing and and that his wand would be destroyed shortly by Ministry representatives (note: the letter doesn't speak out loud in the book, so the Dursleys don't know what it says until Harry tells them).
    • The second one was from Arthur Weasley telling Harry that Dumbledore arrived at the Ministry and is trying to sort everything out and to not leave his aunt and uncle's house, to not do anymore magic and not to surrender his wand.
    • The third one was a second letter from Mafalda Hopkirk telling Harry that the Ministry had instead decided Harry may retain his wand until his hearing, at which time an official decision would be taken and that the Ministry has agreed that the question of his expulsion would also be decided at that time and he should therefore consider himself suspended from school pending further inquiries.
    • The fourth one was a letter from Sirius Black saying that Arthur Weasley informed him (Sirius) and everyone else what had happened and that whatever Harry does, he should not leave the house.
    • Petunia also receives a howler from Albus Dumbledore telling her to "remember his last" which means that his previous letter he sent her 14 years ago.
  • In the film, only Mafalda Hopkirk's first letter is sent to Harry.
  • In the novel, it is said Harry cast the Patronus Charm at 9:23 p.m., but in the film, it is said he cast the charm at 6:23 p.m.

3. The Advance Guard

  • Tonks' status as a Metamorphmagus is never even discussed in the film, though her hair does turn red when Mad-Eye calls her by her first name. She starts changing her nose at the dinner table without any real explanation of her powers.
  • Nymphadora Tonks' name is only mentioned twice in the film, both times by Alastor Moody. Also, she does not appear to have a close relationship with Harry as she did in the books. They never directly talk to each other. Although, she winks at Harry as she walks by him upon arriving at Grimmauld Place, but despite all this, they remain friends.
  • Nymphadora Tonks fictitious competition creation "All-England Best-Kept Lawn Competition" to get the Dursleys to attend in order to escort Harry away is not mentioned and is very likely omitted. The Dursleys leave the house and likely take Dudley (with a blanket over his head) to a hospital as Aunt Petunia mentioned before.
  • In the film, the Advance Guard arrives to remove Harry from Little Whinging right after the Dementor attack. In the book, Harry is grounded for few days until the Advance Guard comes.
  • In the film, there is no mention about Moody's magical eye malfunctioning.
  • In the film, when Harry and the Advance Guard fly by brooms, they fly up the Thames; in the book, they fly at much higher altitude to avoid detection by Muggles.
  • Remus Lupin, Dedalus Diggle, Sturgis Podmore, and Hestia Jones are omitted from the Advance Guard, reducing it to Alastor Moody, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Nymphadora Tonks, Elphias Doge, and Emmeline Vance, the latter two who have no lines. Lupin does appear later in the film, but gets little screen time. Sturgis Podmore is not featured in the film, and his being sent to Azkaban is omitted as well.

4. Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place

  • The details regarding Bill Weasley's moving back to England to be closer to his family with his new position in the Order of the Phoenix and Charlie Weasley being in charge of recruiting foreign wizards to the Order has been completely omitted. Additionally, unlike Bill who would later appear in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Charlie was never acknowledged as a member of the Order in the films.
  • Percy Weasley's standing with the Ministry of Magic is sudden and unexplained, and there is no mention of him disowning his family when he chose to support the Ministry. This creates a large plot hole in the film due to his disposition towards Harry being unexplained, making it confusing for the viewers who did not read the book.
  • In the novel, Harry yells at Ron and Hermione about everything he has done when they mention what Dumbledore told them about not telling Harry anything. He mentions saving the Philosopher's Stone, killing the Basilisk, fighting the dementors in the third year, getting through the maze, and fighting off Voldemort. In the film, he does not yell at all, and his rant is restricted to one single line: "I'm the one who saw Voldemort return, I'm the one who fought him, I'm the one who saw Cedric Diggory get killed." The mentions of what Harry did in the previous books is however mentioned later in the film during the first Dumbledore's Army meeting.

5. The Order of the Phoenix

  • Nymphadora Tonks changes her hair into violet, bubblegum pink, tomato-red, grey and blonde. Also, in the book, her main colour of hair is bubble-gum pink, but in the film it is switched to purple and it stays that way throughout the film. However when Harry is picked up from the Dursleys, Moody calls her Nymphadora and as she angrily tells him not to do that, her hair keeps changing colour, but then their brooms arrive and her hair settles on one colour. This suggests in the film, her hair changes colour when she is feeling a particularly strong emotion.
  • Dobby the house elf, along with original member of the Order of the Phoenix Mundungus Fletcher are not featured in the film. Neville seems to serve as a replacement character for Dobby.

6. The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black

  • Kreacher's role is diminished to only two scenes: him speaking to the Walburga Black's portrait (which is where Harry first sees him) and when he makes insulting comments to Harry. It is also never explained that he gave information to Narcissa Malfoy. In the book, Kreacher is introduced to Harry by Hermione in front of all the Weasley children.
  • In the novel, Sirius tells Harry his family's back story and him being disowned shortly after Harry arrived at Grimmauld Place. In the film, he tells him this during Christmas, where Harry's Christmas party with the Weasleys took place at Grimmauld Place instead of St Mungo's.

7. The Ministry of Magic

  • Harry is never shown waking up at 12 Grimmauld Place and receiving good lucks from the Order members.
  • Mr Weasley does not take Harry into his Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office at the Ministry when they arrive.
  • In the book, Mr Weasley is told by his assistant Perkins that Harry's hearing has been changed to a different time and location. In the film, Mr Weasley is told by Kingsley Shacklebolt. Also, in the book, they were late for the hearing. Additionally in the film, when Harry asks when the hearing starts, Mr Weasley says "In five minutes", while in the book he says "We should have been there five minutes ago!".
  • Perkins never appears nor is mentioned in the film.

8. The Hearing

  • Albus Dumbledore does not produce a chintz armchair out of air. He just keeps standing and then Arabella Figg is seen sitting on Harry's chair and Harry is seen sitting on the balcony.
  • Amelia Bones being impressed by Harry's ability to conjure a Patronus is omitted, although she still votes in clearing him of all charges.
  • There's no mention of Mrs Figg being a Squib, but it is known that she lives in Privet Drive rather than Wisteria Walk.
  • In the movie Fudge never mentions Harry's past offences like inflating his aunt Marge.
  • During the hearing in the book, Cornelius Fudge's line "Laws can be changed" is said after Dumbledore says that the Ministry does not have the power to expel Hogwarts students nor confiscate wands. In the film a similar line "Laws can be changed if necessary, Dumbledore" was used after Dumbledore mentions that magic may be used before Muggles in life-threatening situations, thus the film portrays him as a tyrant. Similarly, in the book, he screams that Harry is cleared of all charges in barely contained fury, while in the film, he instead delivers the sentencing in a much calmer manner.
  • Like in the book, this scene is one of the only times in which Harry and Fudge talk directly to each other. They never speak again to each other throughout the film, except obviously during the discovery of Dumbledore's Army when Harry tries to shield Dumbledore by saying that he (Harry) is the one responsible for creating Dumbledore's Army, but Fudge doesn't speak back.
  • In the movie the whole Fudge's antagonism towards both Harry and Dumbledore was toned down when compared to the book.

9. The Woes of Mrs Weasley

  • Harry does not dump his bag of Galleons into the Fountain of Magical Brethren following the positive results of his trial.
  • In the film, Harry encounters Lucius Malfoy before his trial, not after, but they also do not interact with each other nor speak with mutual hatred.
  • In the book, Mad-Eye Moody shows Harry a picture of the original Order of the Phoenix in No. 12 Grimmauld Place. In the film, Sirius shows him the picture in a back room at King's Cross.
  • Harry and the others cleaning Grimmauld Place is omitted, and as such, Harry going to the hearing occurs the day after he arrives at Grimmauld Place, and after the hearing Harry is next seen at King's Cross to go back to Hogwarts. This omission also removes the event involving the discovery of Salazar Slytherin's locket, which does not prove to be important until the 7th book and film.
  • In the book, there is a scene during the party at 12 Grimmauld Place where we see Mrs Weasley attempting to excise a Boggart from one of the dressers upstairs. Therefore, it is not revealed that Mrs Weasley's worst fear is that her family (and Harry) will die.
  • Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley becoming prefects is omitted from the final cut of the film. In the film, Harry goes with Ron and Hermione on the Hogwarts Express, implying they did not become prefects, as in the book, he went with Neville, Ginny and Luna Lovegood as Ron and Hermione sat in the prefects carriage (though they joined up with them later before they arrived at Hogwarts). This storyline was filmed, however.

10. Luna Lovegood

  • Like Ron, and Hermione, Draco Malfoy, Pansy Parkinson, Ernie Macmillan, Hannah Abbott, Anthony Goldstein and Padma Patil do not become prefects.
  • When Harry, Ron, and Hermione first see a Thestral, Neville is with them. Neville shows no sign of being able to see the Thestral even though he can see Thestrals in the books.
  • In the book, Harry meets Luna Lovegood on the Hogwarts Express, but in the film they meet her on a carriage. Also, in the book it was Ginny who introduced them to Luna, but in the film, it was Hermione, even though she did not know Luna in the book.

11. The Sorting Hat's New Song

  • Despite the title of the chapter, the Sorting Hat does not appear in the film (aside from a deleted scene), let alone sing (although it has never sang before in the films).
  • The Creevey brothers are not featured in the film. However, the character Nigel Wolpert, who is not in the books, seems to serve as a replacement.
Harry and Seamus arguing

Seamus and Harry fighting

  • In the book, Harry and Seamus have their argument in the Gryffindor boys' dormitory in front of Dean Thomas and Neville before Ron enters and tells Seamus off. In the film, Harry and Seamus argue in the Gryffindor Common Room in front of all the boys and girls before Ron enters. Also, in the film, there is no mention of Harry and Ron having met Mrs Finnigan since she was omitted from the previous film.
  • It is shown in the book when Ron comes to break up the fight between Seamus Finnigan and Harry Potter he says he is a prefect and nobody should mess around. However in the film he just says that the fight should stop.
  • Also, Umbridge wears a green tweed cloak and uniform black bow in some parts of the book, but in all the film except Harry's hearing, she wears pink cardigans.

12. Professor Umbridge

  • Snape's Potions class in which he teaches the trio and their classmates how to make the Draught of Peace is omitted from the film.
  • In the book, Umbridge's first class takes place in the afternoon, but in the film, it takes place in the morning. Also, due to this change, Umbridge is already in the classroom seated behind the teacher's desk in the novel, but in the film she enters the classroom after destroying a flying paper bird and also her telling the class to reply "Good morning, Professor Umbridge" (in this case) is omitted.
  • In the novel, the textbook the students use is called Defensive Magical Theory (written by Wilbert Slinkhard), but in the film, the textbooks are called Dark Arts Defence: Basics for Beginners. Also, in the novel, the film's book title "Basics for Beginners" is the name of Chapter 1 which Umbridge requires the students to read.
  • The class reading their textbooks is omitted from the film.
  • Also, in the novel, Umbridge asks the students whether they all have a copy of the textbook they need (Defensive Magical Theory), they don't reply 'yes' or 'no', to which Umbridge wants them to reply "Yes, Professor Umbridge" or "No, Professor Umbridge", to which she tries again and the students answer "Yes, Professor Umbridge". This is omitted from the film, as it is different: The textbooks are located as a pile on the class's front desk and Umbridge levitates them to every student at each desk.
  • Also, in the film, the arguments between Umbridge, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dean Thomas and Parvati Patil in class are shorter than in the book:
    • Hermione only briefly argues about the textbook having nothing about using defensive spells while her other argument lines are omitted.
    • Ron says his exact line from the book "We're not gonna use magic?" but is not told by Umbridge that students will raise their hands when they wish to speak in her class and she does not call him 'Mr' until Ron says "Weasley." The bit about students raising their hands if they'd like to speak in Umbridge's class is instead said to Harry.
    • Dean Thomas does not argue at all, thus omitting his defence of Remus Lupin being called a "dangerous half-breed" and his words about Barty Crouch Jnr being a maniac but learnt loads.
    • Like Dean Thomas, Parvati Patil does not argue at all either, thus omitting her questioning about what will happen during the exams.
    • Harry argues about Lord Voldemort having returned and about the class not going to be risk-free, but does not stand up from his seat when he talks about Cedric Diggory.
  • The scene where Umbridge tells Harry to give McGonagall the note about his behaviour in class is omitted, so instead she just tells him to come straight to her class that evening, rather than tomorrow evening.
  • Professor Grubbly-Plank's Care of Magical Creatures class is omitted from the film. This also omits Draco Malfoy's insulting Hagrid.

13. Detention with Dolores

  • Harry is seen in only one detention. The rest of his detentions are omitted.

14. Percy and Padfoot

  • The Quidditch season is removed entirely from the film. Because of the omission, Angelina Johnson and her fellow chasers Katie Bell and Alicia Spinnet are also cut; Katie returns for the following three films, but Angelina and Alicia are never seen again.
  • Percy sending Hermes to deliver to Ron the letter to stop associating with Harry is absent in the film (Percy's estrangement from his family is practically non-existent in the films).

15. The Hogwarts High Inquisitor

  • The producers also included another scene where Umbridge is walking down a corridor and she waves her wand and a girl and a boy stop kissing. She waves her wand again and she tidies up three boys that walk past her.
  • Draco Malfoy and his cronies are shown to have taken Divination in the film, even though they did not take the subject in the book.

16. In the Hog's Head

  • As in all of the previous films, Ginny's role is diminished, and nothing of her relationship with Michael Corner is ever talked about though they are seen together at the meeting in the Hog's Head where Harry, Ron, and Hermione form Dumbledore's Army.
  • Zacharias Smith is unnamed in the film. Instead, he is known as "Somewhat Doubtful Boy" during the credits. In the films, Zacharias seems to be portrayed as a much less obnoxious person and his role is a lot smaller than in the books.

17. Educational Decree Number Twenty-Four

  • Harry taking Hedwig to see Professor Grubbly-Plank to mend her wing, including finding Sirius' letter attached to Hedwig's leg was not in the film (Grubbly-Plank's role in the film was practically non-existent).
  • Sirius visiting the trio through the fire in the Gryffindor Common Room, when Umbridge's hand comes through was also cut from the film.

18. Dumbledore's Army

DAn

Dumbledore's Army

  • In the film, Hermione has heard of the Room of Requirement; whereas, in the book she has not.
Patil twins OOTP

The Patil twins in the Room of Requirement

19. The Lion and the Serpent

  • Since Quidditch was removed from the film, Ron joining the team as Keeper was omitted as well.
  • Harry and George's assault on Draco Malfoy after he insulted Lily Potter and Arthur and Molly Weasley is also omitted, although there is a scene that is similar to this at the beginning of the film, when Harry tries to attack Draco for mocking him about his trial at the Ministry, only to be held back by Ron. This scene did not occur in the book.

20. Hagrid's Tale

  • Hagrid's talk to Harry, Ron and Hermione about his vacation with Olympe Maxime is omitted.
  • In the book, Hagrid arrives right after the Quidditch game between Gryffindor and Slytherin. In the film, Hagrid arrives very later, after Christmas holidays.

21. The Eye of the Snake

  • In the novel, during a Care of Magical Creatures class, Hagrid tells Harry about Thestrals, but in the film, Luna Lovegood tells him about them in a fabricated scene. The class scene was actually filmed, but cut from the final edit, not even appearing online. (citation needed)
  • Still due to Quidditch removal, there is no mention in the film of Ginny joining the team to replace Harry. This later creates a bit of a plot hole, as while Ron tries out for the team in the next film, Ginny doesn't, but still appears to hold a position of some seniority.
  • In the book, after the kiss between Cho and Harry, Hermione gives a much longer list of reasons why Cho was crying, including her being worried about getting kicked off the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. In the film, the list is shorter, but Hermione says that Cho is worried about failing her O.W.L.s, but Cho in the books is stated as a year ahead of Harry, so she should have taken her O.W.L.s already. Also, Hermione mentions that Cho's mum worked at the Ministry, even though it was Marietta Edgecombe's mum who worked at the Ministry. However, as Marietta was cut, her parts had to be taken by Cho.
  • In the novel, after Harry wakes up from seeing the vision of the attack, Neville goes to fetch McGonagall. This is omitted from the film.

22. St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries

  • Straight after he witnesses Nagini's attack on Arthur Weasley, Harry Potter has his first Occlumency lesson with Snape in the film, but in the book, he takes a Portkey back to Grimmauld Place and is told about Occlumency there later during the holidays.
  • Sirius and Snape's argument did not happen in the film, although some of the words used in the argument were heard during the argument between the two men at the start of the film with Harry and Hermione and the Weasleys listening to the meeting with an Extendable Ear.
  • All scenes regarding St Mungo's are omitted.

23. Christmas on the Closed Ward

  • Due to the omission of St Mungo's, the re-appearance of Gilderoy Lockhart and appearance of Neville's parents are also omitted.
  • In the previous novel, Harry finds out about the condition of Neville's parents from Albus Dumbledore significantly before Neville's other friends learn of it. In the film, Sirius tells Harry how they suffered a fate worse than death, and Neville later tells Harry more in the Room of Requirement.

24. Occlumency

  • The Knight Bus is not featured in the film.
  • In the book, Harry starts Occlumency lessons with Snape after the Christmas holidays on January 9, but in the film, he begins the lessons before the Christmas holidays on December 24.
  • In the book, when asked if Voldemort can read minds, Snape goes into a long explanation that "Mind reading" is not a good term to use for wizards. In the film, when Harry asks if Voldemort will be able to read his mind, Snape simply says "Read it. Control it. Unhinge it," not going into the explanation about the term.

25. The Beetle at Bay

  • Harry's date with Cho Chang in Hogsmeade is omitted.
  • Rita Skeeter was also omitted from the film. In the book, Hermione blackmails her into writing articles that support Harry as the rest of the Wizarding world denies his claims, as well as him being sent dozens of mail. Instead, Seamus believes Harry when he looks at the paper with the Azkaban breakout.

26. Seen and Unforeseen

  • In the film, Hagrid mentioned that the reason for the Centaurs' anger towards humans was because the Ministry of Magic was taking away their lands. There was also a Daily Prophet headline that was used in the film that supported this "MINISTRY ANGERS CENTAURS". In the book, it was because Firenze had taken up the post of Divination teacher, and the centaurs were angry that he was giving away their secrets to his students, combined with that Grawp was living in the forest who was disturbing their habitat.
  • In the book, Hagrid comes back from the giants' world during the first half of the school year, but in the film, he comes after the Christmas holidays.
  • In the film, Harry does not see Snape's father, Tobias yelling at Snape's mother, Eileen Prince, while a young Severus Snape is seen crying in the corner. Although, when Harry breaks into Snape's memory, there is one vision of a young Snape sitting in a corner crying, but it is unknown if it was that scene.
  • In the book, Sybill Trelawney is sacked during one of Harry and Snape's Occlumency lessons after the Christmas holidays, but in the film she was sacked much earlier, when Umbridge begins her job as High Inquisitor.
  • In the book, Umbridge comes to Hagrid's hut while Harry, Ron, and Hermione are already there visiting him, prompting them to hide under the Invisibility Cloak while she's there. In the film, the trio come when Umbridge is already there visiting him, and they wait until she is gone.

27. The Centaur and the Sneak

  • The Centaur Firenze is omitted from all of the films after Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
  • In the book, Dobby comes to tell Harry that Umbridge and her Inquisitorial Squad are coming. In the film, Nigel looks through a hole in the wall and that is how Harry finds out.
  • Umbridge and the Inquisitorial Squad break into the Room of Requirement using "Bombarda Maxima," which did not happen in the book. The film uses this as a reason for Cho and Harry's break-up.
  • In the film during the scene in Dumbledore's office, McGonagall is not present, unlike in the book.
  • In the film, Fudge and everybody enters Dumbledore's office when Harry is dragged there, unlike in the book where they are waiting until Umbridge arrives with Harry.
  • In the book, during Fudge's discovery of Dumbledore's Army, Dumbledore was sitting behind his desk, but in the film he was sitting on his desk.
  • In the novel, Dumbledore's Army is discovered because Marietta Edgecombe, a member and a friend of Cho Chang, tattled to Umbridge. In the film, Cho is duped into revealing the truth via Veritaserum as the existence of Marietta was removed entirely.
  • When Cornelius Fudge arrives to arrest Dumbledore in the film, Dumbledore disappears by clapping his hands onto Fawkes and disappearing in a flourish of fire. In the novel, Dumbledore knocks out Fudge, Umbridge, Dawlish, and Kingsley Shacklebolt, but still escapes using Fawkes before the others regain consciousness. Also, in the novel, Percy leaves the room before Dumbledore knocks everybody (except Harry and McGonagall) out. This does not happen in the film.
  • Dumbledore uses Fawkes to escape; in the book this was necessary, since many characters repeatedly stated that nobody can actually apparate in the castle. In the films, however, Dumbledore later reveals that the charms do not affect him as he is Headmaster.
  • In the book, after Dumbledore escapes, Phineas Nigellus Black states "You know, Minister, I disagree with Dumbledore on several points, but you can't deny, he's got style." In the film, Kingsley Shacklebolt says a similar line: "You may not like him Minister, but you can't deny... Dumbledore's got style."

28. Snape's Worst Memory

  • In the book, members of the Inquisitorial Squad had additional powers such as docking points even from Prefects. This is only shown when Umbridge gives them their badges.
  • Umbridge is not seen slipping Veritaserum into Harry's tea.
  • In the film, all Dumbledore's Army members are seen having detention in the Great Hall, under the sight of Umbridge. The detention is just the same as Harry's with the Blood Quill. In the book, this scene does not exist.
  • In the film, Harry saw his father (both parents in the book) in the flashback by using the Protego spell on Snape instead of looking at the memory through the Pensieve. Young Lily Potter is also cut from the film; the scene of her defending Snape and Snape calling her a mudblood never appears at all in the films, not even during The Prince's Tale.
  • In the book, Harry sees Snape being harassed by James and Sirius via Snape's Pensieve, while in the film, Harry casts a shield against Snape's Legilimency spell and sees Snape's memories. Also, in the film, it is only James that bullies Snape while Sirius just watches amusedly.
  • Also in Snape's Pensive, Remus Lupin is shown to be laughing at Snape in the film instead of pretending to read and ignore the situation like in the novel.

29. Career Advice

  • Harry's career advice session is omitted. This would contradict the next film, as Harry mentions being told he needed an O in his Potions O.W.L. to continue.
  • Fred and George Weasley's Portable Swamp is omitted from the film.
  • In the book, Umbridge and McGonagall argue about how she punishes students during Harry's career guidance meeting and also have a minor disagreement during class inspections. In the film, the two argue on the Grand Staircase very earlier and McGonagall's class inspection is omitted completely.
  • In the book, Prof. Umbridge and Filch are seen using spells to try and stop the firecrackers, but in the film, they do nothing but run, scream, duck and dodge. In the book, the twins were never on broomsticks, and the scene lasted much longer.
  • Fred and George Weasley's departure from Hogwarts is done differently from the book. In the book they first send out their enchanted fireworks to cause a disturbance and later caused another disturbance to give Harry time to sneak into Umbridge's office to use her Floo Network and then flee after being cornered by Umbridge. In the film, the Weasley twins leave after releasing their fireworks.
  • As the Weasley twins' diversion is cut from the film, another scene is also cut, where Harry uses Umbridge's Floo Network connection to contact Sirius and Lupin at Grimmauld Place to consult them about their treatment of Snape when they were all students at Hogwarts.

30. Grawp

  • Grawp is portrayed as very gentle, whilst in the book he is very violent and even strikes his half-brother Hagrid in the face during his appearance.
  • In the book Harry and Hermione were introduced to Grawp by Hagrid while the school was distracted by the Quidditch final of Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw, while in the film Ron was also present, because Quidditch was completely omitted in the film.

31. O.W.L.s

  • In the book, Cornelius Fudge's Aurors and Dolores Umbridge try to take Hagrid away, and as a result, Professor McGonagall gets hit by four stunning spells, and gets taken to St Mungos.
  • McGonagall is not injured, as the scene where Hagrid is driven away is omitted, however a deleted scene shows her in a wheelchair.
  • In the book, several weeks go by between the Weasley twins leaving, and the O.W.L. Exams where Harry sees the vision of Sirius being tortured at the Ministry of Magic during the exams. In the film, these occur one after the other on the same day, along with Harry, Ron, and Hermione getting caught by Umbridge trying to use her Floo Network connection.
  • There are a lot more Educational Decrees in the film when compared to the book, often having ridiculous rules that were invented for the film. This was likely done since many scenes showcasing Umbridge's tyranny did not exist in the film.
  • Also in the film, due to the very large number of Decrees, it completely covered the wall they were posted on, and that all of them were destroyed when Fred and George Weasley released their enchanted fireworks during their escape from Hogwarts. This difference is also carried into the video game.
  • In the book Fred and George Weasley suggest to Harry that he should use the Floo Network from the fireplace in Umbridge's office to connect to Grimmauld Place after Umbridge told Harry that it is not under observation by the Ministry. In the film however, Harry figures it out on his own and mentions it to Ron and Hermione as he is heading down there.

32. Out of the Fire

  • In the film, Kreacher never tricks Harry into searching the Ministry for Sirius. In fact, Harry wasn't even able to get the chance to use the floo powder to attempt to contact Sirius Black before Umbridge (who had been lying in wait for them at her office) interfered.
  • In the book, the members of Dumbledore's Army that come with Harry are mentioned to be bound and gagged after being caught. In the film Luna, Neville, Ginny, Ron and Hermione are not forced to enter Umbridge's office in the mentioned state.
  • In the book and the film, Umbridge catches Harry using her fireplace to connect with Sirius, but in the book, he denies it twice, making Umbridge call him a liar twice and shove him away from her. In the film, Harry denies it once, making Umbridge call him a liar once and slap him across the face.
  • In the film, when Umbridge is about to use the Cruciatus Curse against Harry, she turns a picture of Fudge face-down, which never happens in the book.
  • In the book, after being caught by Umbridge during his attempt to break into her office she revealed to Harry and his friends that she had illegally sent the Dementors to attack Harry over the summer without Fudge's knowledge as a way to discredit Harry. In the film, the one responsible is a mystery, although it was still Umbridge, since the film follows up with what happens in the novel even though they are not shown, and it is implied when she attempts to illegally use the Cruciatus Curse on Harry without Fudge knowing.

33. Fight and Flight

Hermione web header

Hermione looks, right after Umbridge is carried away

  • When the centaurs take Umbridge away, they pay no attention to Harry or Hermione, while in the book they attack them as well. Also in the film Grawp is present as the centaurs attack Umbridge, and picks her up before they take her away, while in the book he arrives as the centaurs are about to take Harry and Hermione away. There is also no mention of how Umbridge got out of the forest; the only time she appears afterwards in the film is when a Daily Prophet shows her packing up after being fired.
  • In the book, when Grawp is shot by the centaurs, he yells and bleeds. In the film, none of these things happen.
  • In the book, when going to the Ministry of Magic on Thestrals, Luna Lovegood rides side-saddle. In the film, she rides as the rest of the party does.
  • In the book, Ron, Ginny, Luna and Neville get out of Dolores Umbridge's office a different way. In the book, Ron mentions that they got out using several spells. However, in the film it is Ron who tricked the Inquisitorial Squad into eating some Puking Pastilles. Also in the book, Ron, Ginny, Luna and Neville meet Harry and Hermione in the Forbidden Forest while in the film they meet on the Wooden Bridge.

34. The Department of Mysteries

  • In the film, a large number of the rooms Harry, Ron, Hermione, Luna, Neville, and Ginny had to go through, before finding the Hall of Prophecy, were left out.

35. Beyond the Veil

169359 414832471900291 1453808805 o

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - Ministry of Magic

  • In the book, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Neville, and Luna all use Reducto on the shelves in the Hall of Prophecy to break them and distract the Death Eaters. In the film, this is caused by Ginny using Reducto on a Death Eater (possibly Avery or Mulciber).
  • In the book, the Death Eaters do not Apparate inside the Ministry of Magic as they do in the film. Apparition in the film seems to turn the Death Eaters into a fast moving smoke rather than real teleportation, while Order members turn into a stream of silver steam instead. Fred and George seem to Apparate the same way as in the book.
  • In the film, Harry does not reveal that Voldemort is a half-blood like himself and revealing that Voldemort's mother was a witch, but that his father was a Muggle.
  • In the film, when fighting a Death Eater in the Hall of Prophecy, Luna is seen to use levicorpus, a spell which Harry discovered in the former potions textbook of potions master Severus Snape in his sixth year, after the events of the fifth book. Luna should not know of the spell as such. Furthermore, the effect of levicorpus in the film is different to that in the book. In the film, Luna uses levicorpus to send the Death Eater flying backwards. In the book, Harry accidentally uses the spell on Ron to leave him dangling in mid-air by one of his ankles.
  • In the film, Albus Dumbledore appears in the Ministry Atrium after Sirius's death, but in the book, he is spotted by Harry and Neville in the Death Chamber before Sirius dies.
  • In the film, Bellatrix Lestrange kills Sirius Black with the Killing Curse, which then causes Sirius' body to fade away into the veil in the Death Chamber. In the book, the curse is not named and is not even implied to have been the Killing Curse. The Killing Curse causes a green light whereas the light that came from Bellatrix was red and non-verbal, suggesting it was a mere Stunning Spell or an Impedimenta Jinx.
  • In the novel version of the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, Hermione gets critically injured by a curse from Antonin Dolohov, Ron is attacked by disembodied brains in the Thought Chamber, Ginny Weasley's ankle is broken, Neville Longbottom's nose and wand are broken, Luna Lovegood gets knocked out while attempting to perform Colloportus [a spell that magically locks doors], and Nymphadora Tonks, Alastor Moody, and Kingsley Shacklebolt are injured in duels. In the film, these injuries are omitted and the group makes it out with only minor injuries and Neville's wand is not broken. This creates a continuity error in the final films when Neville is seen with a new wand.
  • In the novel, Ron, Hermione, Luna, Neville, and Ginny fight and flee from the Death Eaters during the battle, instead of being captured by them, as they are in the film.
  • In the film, after killing Sirius, Bellatrix gives a very brief look of remorse before breaking into a smile.
  • In the film, after Harry gives Lucius Malfoy the prophecy, Sirius says to Lucius "Get away from my godson!" and punches him in the face, which never occurred in the book, though Sirius did do a fairly similar thing to Antonin Dolohov.
  • In the book, Dumbledore appears in the Death Chamber before Sirius dies, while in the film he appears in the Ministry Atrium after Sirius dies.
  • In the book, the archway has a veil, whereas in the film it has a sort of mist.
  • In the film, Sirius mistakenly calls Harry by the name of "James." This does not happen in the book; it is only debated that Sirius views Harry as a pal in the same way he viewed James Potter.
  • Harry was seen casting a nonverbal spell. However, in the sixth book Harry was said to have difficulty with nonverbal spells.

36. The Only One He Ever Feared

  • In the book, Bellatrix Lestrange talks to Harry about the Cruciatus Curse, saying he has to mean it. In the film, Voldemort talks to Harry from behind, telling him what Bellatrix did, and prompting him to use it.
  • In the book, Dumbledore uses the Fountain of Magical Brethren to protect Harry while duelling Voldemort, and Fawkes takes a Killing Curse for him. In the film, only Dumbledore protects Harry and does not use the Fountain.
  • Harry hiding behind the heads of the fountain is omitted.
  • In the film, the statues never come to life, so Bellatrix Lestrange leaves the Ministry of Magic using the Floo Network. In the book, she was trapped under a statue and Lord Voldemort takes her with him as he Disapparates.
  • Fawkes does not interfere during the duel.
  • Lord Voldemort's conjuring or even having the Silver Shield is omitted.
  • In the film, Bellatrix escapes by using the Floo Network while Dumbledore arrives, but in the book, she Disapparates with Voldemort after his duel with Dumbledore.
  • In the book, Harry frees himself from Voldemort's possession due to his grief over Sirius' death. In the film, he frees himself from Voldemort's possession due to the strong love he feels for his friends and Sirius.
  • In the film, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Neville and Luna come into the Atrium to find Dumbledore kneeling beside Harry and then they see Voldemort hovering above Harry and then watch him disappear as soon as Cornelius Fudge and other Ministry officials arrive. In a deleted scene, Lupin, Shacklebolt, Tonks and Moody also come into the atrium and see this.
  • Albus Dumbledore doesn't shout thunderously at Cornelius Fudge and scold him when Dumbledore was telling him the truth for a year.

37. The Lost Prophecy

  • In the book, Harry Potter loses his temper with Dumbledore after Sirius Black's death and smashes his possessions, which did not happen in the film. This may be due to Harry's understanding of and pity for Voldemort's inability to either love or know love.
  • In the film, Dumbledore doesn't explain the prophecy to Harry.
  • In the film, Harry never learns that it is Sybill Trelawney who made the prophecy, since Dumbledore never shows Harry his memory of being told the prophecy. Whereas in the film, Harry hears the prophecy come out of its orb as soon as he touches it in the Hall of Prophecy. The prophecy does, however, speak in Trelawney's voice.

38. The Second War Begins

  • In the film, after the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, a Daily Prophet article mentions Fudge resigning from his post. In the book however the Daily Prophet that was released after the incident did not mention anything about Fudge's resignation and it wasn't until the following book that would reveal that Fudge had lost his job as the Minister for Magic after the incident.
  • Harry receiving a Two-way mirror as a present from his godfather Sirius Black shortly before his death that would have allowed him to communicate with Sirius if he had not died was removed. However, the scene was filmed, and the mirror is present in the film version of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, implied to have been given to Harry offscreen as part of Sirius Black's will.
  • No ghosts appear in the film, so Harry never questions Nearly Headless Nick about ghosts.
  • In the novel, Luna tells Harry that her mother died when she was 9 years old when Harry finds her pinning up notices of her lost things, but in the film, she tells him about her mother's death in the earlier scene in the Forbidden Forest where she also tells him about Thestrals, unlike in the novel where Hagrid does during a Care of Magical Creatures class in Chapter 21.
  • In the film, there is a scene in which Harry and Luna notice a pair of trainers hanging from an archway when Luna is putting up her notices.
  • Draco Malfoy's new found hatred for Harry Potter due to his father's arrest has been omitted and instead would not be mentioned until the following film. Therefore, the scene where Harry tries to curse Malfoy, Snape takes 10 points from Gryffindor and McGonagall returns to Hogwarts and awards Gryffindor 250 points and Ravenclaw 50 points for the battle in the Department of Mysteries is also omitted. A scene of Draco, Vincent Crabbe, and Gregory Goyle sulking by the lake because of this incident was filmed, however, but cut from the final edit and deleted scenes.
  • Harry's visit to his friends in the Hospital Wing and to Hagrid in his hut is omitted.
  • Draco's attempt to attack Harry Potter on the Hogwarts Express with Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle to get revenge for their fathers' arrests, only to be stopped by the members of Dumbledore's Army is omitted.
  • The scene where members of the Order speak with the Dursleys at King's Cross about Harry is also not included.

Behind the scenes

  • The company which created the film trailer entitled Divine Crusade is X-Ray Dog.
  • In Snape's memory, Hogwarts students are seen wearing uniforms of the same design as the uniforms used in the first two films. This gives a reason in the story for the different uniforms from the second film to the third film despite the real reason being the change of direction.
  • During production, several cast members including the core trio of Radcliffe, Watson and Grint filmed a mini-adventure entitled The Queen's Handbag for broadcast during a celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's 80th birthday.
  • Over the opening shot of the Warner Bros. logo, the voice of Nagini can be heard, speaking Parseltongue.
  • The only scene involving Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy is when Harry gets off the Hogwarts Express.
  • Only appearance of the London Underground Station.
  • Director David Yates stated in an interview that he had originally shot a three hour film for Order of the Phoenix. However, some material had to be cut out in the final edit, as the film was 45 minutes too long.[3] Therefore, several locations which were used for various scenes do not appear in the final cut of the film. In Verginia Water, scenes were shot where Professor McGonagall recovers from Stunning Spells,[4] and Burnham Beeches was used for filming the scene where Hagrid introduces his fifth-year Care of Magical Creatures class to Thestrals.[5] Harry skips stones in front of Bonnie Prince Charlie's Monument in Glenfinnan in another cut scene.[6]
  • Because Quidditch is absent in the film, the only scenes involving the use of a broomstick is when Harry departs from Privet Drive and when Fred and George leave the school.
  • Dolores Umbridge appears briefly in Half-Blood Prince repeating her line "I will have order!" from this film.
  • Second time Dumbledore announces a reminder from Mr Filch (interrupted by Umbridge).
  • In the film, Dolores Umbridge does not say Harry Potter's first name at all. She does use the name "Potter" when saying his surname or calling him "Mr Potter" when addressing Harry.
  • At 132 minutes, this is the second shortest film (next to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2) despite it being the longest book.
  • The interior set for 12 Grimmauld Place was reused as the residence of Sherlock Holmes, 221B Baker Street, in the 2009 Guy Ritchie film (also a Warner Bros. film).
  • The scene when Dumbledore uses a spell that makes water surround Voldemort inspired the makers of the 2010 film The Last Airbender.[7]
  • After the title appears, an orb, much like the prophecy orbs, can be seen which then changes into the sun as to transition from the title clip to the film.
  • If the subtitles are on when Harry gets a letter from the Ministry and an owl hits the wall, it says "Hedwig screeches", though the owl is not Hedwig.
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was the sole Harry Potter film whose screenplay was not written by Steve Kloves. It was instead written by Michael Goldenberg, who had previously submitted a few pages for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which were ultimately not selected.
  • Presumably due to this, it is Lucius, rather than Neville, who breaks the prophecy in the film by failing to catch it.
  • This film and Chamber of Secrets are the only two films in the series to not be nominated for an Academy (Oscar) Award.
  • Helen McCrory was originally cast to play the role of Bellatrix Lestrange, but had to back out when she suddenly became pregnant. Helena Bonham Carter took her place, while McCrory ended up getting cast as Bellatrix's younger sister, Narcissa Malfoy, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, instead.
  • Mason Kayne was originally considered for the role of Barnabas the Barmy, the figure in the tapestry outside the Room of Requirement, but the scenes were never filmed and the tapestry does not appear in the film.
  • During the scene in the common room just after Harry and Cho kiss, Hermione says that Cho Chang is 'afraid of failing her O.W.L.S because she's too busy worrying about everything else. Cho, however, was in the year above Harry, so would have already taken her Ordinary Wizarding Level.
  • This is the last film released in both widescreen and full screen formats. The last three films were released only in widescreen format.
