Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (film) or (Part 2) |
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be the final two films of the Harry Potter film series, based on the seventh book by J. K. Rowling. The release dates are listed below.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I is the first part of the last film.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II is the second part of the last film.
| "Years ago, we briefly — and seriously — considered doing Goblet of Fire as two films. So this concept is not altogether new. As for Deathly Hallows, I intuited — almost from the first moments I began reading it and certainly once I'd finished — that to realize the story in a single film was going to be a tall order. Others in 'the group' felt similarly. So the idea of two films began to get kicked around as early as late summer of 2007. We didn't take it lightly. But ultimately everyone felt that despite the challenges it would present, it was the most sound creative decision. I'm sure some will think we're crazy. My wife looked at me cross-eyed when I first mentioned it. But I'm really excited about it because it should allow us to stretch a bit with the characters and give them the proper send-off. The story is highly emotional and those moments deserve time to breathe. And, personally, I feel we owe it to Jo — in order to preserve the integrity of the work — and the fans — for their loyalty all these years — to give them the best and most complete experience possible."[1] |
[2] The films will be shot back to back,[3] and treated as if it were one film.[4] The idea to split the films had been around since the middle of 2007,[1] but only really came into serious consideration after producer David Heyman was able to talk to writer Steve Kloves when the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike ended and Heyman had Rowling's approval.[4] As of April 2009, Kloves is working on the script of second part.[5]
On March 12, 2008, Warner Brothers confirmed that the movie would be split into two, to do justice to the book.[6]David Yates, director of Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince will return to direct and Steve Kloves is going to write the screenplay. According to Warner Bros. executive Alan F. Horn it will allow "an extra hour and a half to celebrate what this franchise has been and do justice to all the words and ideas in the amazing story."[3] Heyman described the workings behind the split: "Deathly Hallows is so rich, the story so dense and there is so much that is resolved that, after discussing it with Rowling, we came to the conclusion that two parts were needed."[3] Due to the WGA strike, Kloves was not able to start work on the script until it ended.[7]
Before David Yates was officially chosen to direct the film, others had expressed an interest in the job. Alfonso Cuarón, director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, had said that he would be "tempted" to return to direct.[8]Guillermo del Toro, who passed on Prisoner of Azkaban, had expressed interest in directing Deathly Hallows,[9] but an increased workload ruled him out of the project.[10]
Heyman noted that the films will be a closer recreation of the books than the previous films because of the length a two-part adaptation entails.[5]Daniel Radcliffe said: "This is a road movie, particularly in Part One of the film. People have been so used to seeing Harry Potter at Hogwarts and we're just not there for the first part of the film. That seems to have really freshened things up, and hopefully will get people seeing the films with fresh eyes again, because its just a totally different look when you're not just sat in the same room the whole time."[5]
Although Yates had retained composer Nicholas Hooper for Half-Blood Prince, John Williams, who composed the scores to the first three films, has expressed interest in returning to score the film. Currently, there is no composer confirmed to produce the score. [11]
Yates and Heyman have noted that some of the events of this film had an effect on the way the sixth film was written.[12]
The first part of Deathly Hallows will end as the trio are captured by the Snatchers, the second part or film (if two movies are planned) begins as they arrive at the Malfoy Manor.[13]
Daniel Radcliffe pretended to scare the fans when he said "There will be two films for Hallows, and if there isn't, I'm not returning to play Harry Potter."
The reason for two parts or films as David Heyman has stated is so there will be no major cuts in characters and scenes. This allows the movie or two movies (if two films are planned) to be more in depth than the other six films.

Pre-production began on January 26 2009, and filming began on February 19 2009 at Leavesden Film Studios, where the previous six films had been shot, and Pinewood Studios.[14][15] Eduardo Serra is the cinematographer.[16] Yates said that the film will be shot "with loads of hand-held cameras. I want to shake things up every time I go into this world. I like experimenting as we go along."[17]
During production at Leavesden, Radcliffe's stunt double David Holmes suffered a serious spinal injury, during filming of an aerial sequence. Holmes fell to the ground following an explosion which was part of the stunt[18][19][20][21]. It is probable that the aerial sequence and explosion is the Battle over Little Whinging. This left Holmes paralysed from the waist down and it is reported he will be unable to ever walk again[22].
[edit] Shooting's Schedule
David Heyman revealed work will begin in early 2009 on the seventh movie in the series.
"We finished the sixth film which'll be coming out next summer and we start filming the seventh which we'll be breaking into two parts for a 54 week shoot starting in February (2009)."[23][24]
Test shoots were done on January 26, 2009 as Emma Watson revealed on her Official Website. [25][26] Unfortunately, just days later it was reported that a stunt double for Daniel Radcliffe was seriously injured while testing an explosion scene.[27]
Filming started officially on February 15, 2009.[28]

- On April 21, 2009, photos of Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) with a tent camped in a open field along with the Deathly Hallows staff and crew has been circling around the web. The report says that it was shot in Scotland.[29]
- On the same day, The-Leaky-Cauldron.org first reported that location filming for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has been set in Piccadilly Circus and Shaftesbury Avenue portion of London, England.
- Hundreds of Photos of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint including the crew & staff & 200+ extras for the film production has been released on the net during shooting hours from midnight to 6 a.m. and on the next day, April 22. [30][31][32]
- On April 22, BBC News reported the actual dates of Deathly Hallows filming on the coastline of Wales will take place May 11th through the 15th, 2009 on Freshwater West beach of the Pembrokeshire National Park where the scenes for Shell Cottage are said to be shot.[33]
- On 24th of April, The T-L-C website released the first photos of the Shell Cottage while under construction on the coastline in the Pembrokeshire area of Wales.[34]
- Various pictures can be seen of the cast of HP-DH filming scenes from the film on this Site. These are the Shell Cottage scenes, most likely.
- They started shooting the forest scenes at Swinley Forest on 10 June 2009.[35]
- Numerous photos of the main casts including pictures of Sophie Thompson (Mafalda Hopkirk), David O'Hara (Albert Runcorn) and Steffan Rhodri (Reg Cattermole) along with the set reports from Deathly Hallows filming in Whitehall, London have emerged online since the 28 of June 2009, which appear to be the scene in which Harry, Hermione and Ron infiltrated the Ministry of Magic to obtain the Real Horcrux Locket from Dolores Umbridge.[36]
- Stunt sequences for Deathly Hallows were shot Thursday (July 23) and Friday night (July 24) in Dartford tunnel in Kent, England, with Harry and Hagrid's doubles (Daniel Radcliffe and Robbie Coltrane were not filming) driving against the traffic on Sirius's motorcycle. This scene follows the Seven Potters escapade in Privet Drive; Harry's double is also noted to be pointing his wand at an unknown enemy. Photos from the location shoot has emerged online since 27th of July, 2009.[37]
- According to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, which is hosting a Harry Potter Exhibition, some of David Thewlis' costumes were sent to the UK because Thewlis will need to wear them for the wedding scenes. This filming will begin on August 10 2009.[38]

John Williams said he is confident he will return for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but there is not yet an official announcement made by WB or John Williams himself. [39]
Nicholas Hooper (who composed the soundtracks for Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince) said he will not return for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

- Clemence Poesy as Fleur Delacour.[43][44] A beautiful French woman who is a member of the Order of the Phoenix and engaged to Bill Weasley.
- Julie Walters as Molly Weasley. Member of the Order of the Phoenix and mother of the Weasleys. She greatly fears for the safety of her family as they become more and more wrapped up in the Wizarding War.
- Mark Williams as Arthur Weasley. Member of the Order of the Phoenix and father of the Weasleys. He is less protective than his wife and accepts sacrifices will be made in the Wizarding War. [45]

- Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange. A sadistic Death Eater, escaped from Azkaban. She is the sister of Narcissa Malfoy, and therefore, the aunt of Draco Malfoy and wholly worships Lord Voldemort.
- Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy. Recently escaped from Azkaban. His loyalty to Voldemort and his sense of moral is becoming confused.
- Timothy Spall as Peter Pettigrew. Voldemort's cowardly servant who was responsible for restoring Voldemort to his body.[49]
- Helen McCrory as Narcissa Malfoy.[49] Wife of Lucius, sister of Bellatrix and mother of Draco. Her loyalty to Voldemort and her sense of moral is becoming confused.

- Victoire Weasley - The oldest child of Bill and Fleur Weasley and is seen kissing Teddy Lupin.
- Scorpius Malfoy - The only child of Draco Malfoy and Astoria Greengrass and the same age as Albus Potter and Rose Weasley.
- Astoria Greengrass - A Pure-blood witch and the younger sister of Daphne Greengrass, she married Draco Malfoy with whom she had at least one child, a son named Scorpius.
- Augusta Longbottom - The grandmother of Neville Longbottom, who both fight in the Battle of Hogwarts.

Many of the Death Eater actors are expected to return: Lord John Paul Castrianni (Yaxley) (whose scenes were ultimately cut from the Half Blood Prince Film), Ralph Ineson (Amycus Carrow), Peter Best (Walden Macnair), Richard Cubison (Antonin Dolohov), and Tav MacDougall (Travers).
Nina Young is also expected to reprise her role as the Grey Lady.
During an interview on the "Paul O’Grady Show" Zoë Wanamaker said she was disappointed that she was never asked to return as Madam Hooch and wouldn't mind doing so for the last movie or two movies.
Emma Thompson will not return as Sybill Trelawney because she chose to work on Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang.
Casting for young Severus Snape, Lily Evans, James Potter, Sirius Black, and casting for Petunia Evans have yet to be announced; most likely these scenes will be cut
It was announced on August 9th, 2009 that Jamie Waylett, who experienced legal difficulties earlier in the year, would not be returning for his role of Vincent Crabbe. Instead Gregory Goyle will cast the Fiendfyre spell and will die as a result.[62]

Both parts will be written by Steve Kloves, who wrote the first, second, third, fourth and sixth films, and directed by David Yates, who directed the previous two films. David Heyman and David Barron are producing both parts.[63]
Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Eduardo Serra has been appointed to be the Director of Photography.[64]
Special effects will supervised by Paul J. Franklin.[65]
Stuart Craig will once again design new sets for both films. New sets include the Malfoy Manor, the Tonks' house, the wedding marquee, the Tottenham Court Road cafe, Sirius's bedroom at 12 Grimmauld Place, Dolores Umbridge's Ministry office, Ministry courtroom, the tent, Shell Cottage, Godric's Hollow, Bathilda Bagshot's home, the Lovegood home, the Lestrange vault in Gringotts, the Hog's Head, Ravenclaw Tower, and possibly other new parts of Hogwarts castle.
[edit] Differences From the Books
It has been announced that there will be a scene with the Minister for Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, making a speech about how times will "grow darker still" to Ministry employees. There will also be a scene with Neville, Luna, and Ginny on the Hogwarts Express. It is thought that a chase scene on land will be added into the 7 Potter fight sequence. It has been anounced that Bill will be attacked during the Battle over Little Whinging. It has been hinted at that an extended wand battle between Umbridge and Harry will be included and a chase scene with the Snatchers will take place during the film's climax. Also, judged by the pictures, Harry Potter will most likely not be disguised as "Barny Weasley" during the wedding. The Ron and Hermione kiss is thought to be changed to take place in the Chamber of Secrets.
It has been announced that the character Vincent Crabbe will not appear in the movie due to the drug charges against actor Jamie Waylett, and that Gregory Goyle will die in his place.[4].
It was announced recently at Mugglenet that Josh Herdman slipped the information that the division between the two parts of the Deathly Hallows film will occour after the trio is caught by the Snatchers, and that the Malfoy Manor part will happen at Part II.
