- "It All Ends 7.15"
- — Official tagline
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is the second installment of a two-part film based on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling, and the final film in the Harry Potter series.
"Years ago, we briefly — and seriously — considered doing Goblet of Fire as two films. So this concept is not altogether new. As for Deathly Hallows, I intuited — almost from the first moments I began reading it and certainly once I'd finished — that to realize the story in a single film was going to be a tall order. Others in 'the group' felt similarly. So the idea of two films began to get kicked around as early as late summer of 2007. We didn't take it lightly. But ultimately everyone felt that despite the challenges it would present, it was the most sound creative decision. I'm sure some will think we're crazy. My wife looked at me cross-eyed when I first mentioned it. But I'm really excited about it because it should allow us to stretch a bit with the characters and give them the proper send-off. The story is highly emotional and those moments deserve time to breathe. And, personally, I feel we owe it to Jo — in order to preserve the integrity of the work — and the fans — for their loyalty all these years — to give them the best and most complete experience possible."[2] |
David Yates, who directed the preceding two films, directed both parts, while Steve Kloves returned to script[2]. The first part was released internationally on November 18 2010 and the following day in the United Kingdom and the United States, with the second released on 15 July 2011.Cite error: Invalid <ref>
tag; invalid names, e.g. too many Production of the two films occurred concurrently,[3] and treated as if it were one film.[4] The idea to split the films had been around since the middle of 2007,[2] but only really came into serious consideration after producer David Heyman was able to talk to writer Steve Kloves when the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike ended and Heyman had Rowling's approval.[4]
On 12 March 2008, Warner Bros. additionally confirmed that the film would be split into two, to do justice to the book.[5]David Yates, director of Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince will return to direct and Steve Kloves is going to write the screenplay. According to Warner Bros. executive Alan F. Horn it will allow "an extra hour and a half to celebrate what this franchise has been and do justice to all the words and ideas in the amazing story."[3] Heyman described the workings behind the split: "Deathly Hallows is so rich, the story so dense and there is so much that is resolved that, after discussing it with Rowling, we came to the conclusion that two parts were needed."[3] Due to the WGA strike, Kloves was not able to start work on the script until it ended.[6]
Before David Yates was officially chosen to direct the film, others had expressed an interest in the job. Alfonso Cuarón, director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, had said that he would be "tempted" to return to direct.[7]Guillermo del Toro, who passed on Prisoner of Azkaban, had expressed interest in directing Deathly Hallows,[8] but an increased workload ruled him out of the project.[9]
Heyman noted that the films will be a closer recreation of the books than the previous films because of the length a two-part adaptation entails.[10]Daniel Radcliffe said: "This is a road film, particularly in Part One of the film. People have been so used to seeing Harry Potter at Hogwarts and we're just not there for the first part of the film. That seems to have really freshened things up, and hopefully will get people seeing the films with fresh eyes again, because it's just a totally different look when you're not just sat in the same room the whole time."[10]
Although Yates had retained composer Nicholas Hooper for Half-Blood Prince, John Williams (who composed the scores to the first three films) had expressed interest in returning to score the film - however he did not state which part he would be contributing to. In January 2010 Alexandre Desplat, a French composer, was confirmed to produce the score for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. [11] In November 2010 it was confirmed that Alexandre Desplat (despite many fans wanting Williams) would compose the second part. Yates and Heyman have noted that some of the events of this film had an effect on the way the sixth film was written.[12]
The first part of Deathly Hallows ends as Voldemort retrieves the Elder Wand from Albus Dumbledore's tomb.[13] This would mean that the beginning of this film would be the trio planning the Gringott's Break-in.
In the wake of the success of the 3-D film Avatar in late 2009, Warner Bros. announced that the Deathly Hallows films will be converted to 3-D for showing in 3-D.[14]However, the first film was not released in 3-D due to time constraints. The second film is nonetheless being widely released in traditional 2-D as well for ticket-buyers who prefer that viewing option.
It received a 97 percent (5 star) approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com.
Filming
Pre-production began on January 26, 2009, and filming began on February 19, 2009 at Leavesden Film Studios, where the previous six films had been shot, and Pinewood Studios.[15][16] Eduardo Serra is the cinematographer.[17] Yates said that the film will be shot "with loads of hand-held cameras. I want to shake things up every time I go into this world. I like experimenting as we go along."[18] Filming is reportedly over, ending the decade long of filming for the cast.[19]
During production at Leavesden, Radcliffe's stunt double David Holmes suffered a serious spinal injury during filming of an aerial sequence. Holmes fell to the ground following an explosion which was part of the stunt.[20][21][22][23] It is probable that the aerial sequence and explosion is the Battle over Little Whinging. This left Holmes paralysed from the waist down and it is reported he will be unable to ever walk again.[24]
Shooting schedule
David Heyman gave additional details on the filming schedule on the two films:
"We finished the sixth film which'll be coming out next summer and we start filming the seventh which we'll be breaking into two parts for a 54 week shoot starting in February (2009)."[25][26]
Test shoots were done on January 26, 2009 as Emma Watson revealed on her Official Website. [27][28] Unfortunately, just days later it was reported that a stunt double for Daniel Radcliffe was seriously injured while testing an explosion scene.[29]
Filming for both parts started officially on February 15, 2009[30] and ended on June 12, 2010. [31]
Daniel Radcliffe confirmed that the Epilogue scenes will be re-shot, thus making it problematic for make-up artists to come up with a wig for Emma Watson who cut her hair in August. The shootings will take place at Christmas, on the set of Leavesden this time, not at King's Cross, as initially planned.
Filming on location
- On April 21, 2009, photos of Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) with a tent camped in a open field along with the Deathly Hallows staff and crew have been circling around the web. The report says that it was shot in Scotland.[32]
- On the same day, The-Leaky-Cauldron.org first reported that location filming for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has been set in Piccadilly Circus and Shaftesbury Avenue portion of London, England.
- Hundreds of photos of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint including the crew & staff & 200+ extras for the film production has been released on the net during shooting hours from midnight to 6 a.m. and on the next day, April 22. [33][34][35]
- On April 22, BBC News reported that Deathly Hallows filming on the coastline of Wales will take place from 11th to 15th May 2009 on Freshwater West beach of the Pembrokeshire National Park where the scenes for Shell Cottage are said to be shot.[36]
- On 24th of April, The T-L-C website released the first photos of the Shell Cottage while under construction on the coastline in the Pembrokeshire area of Wales.[37]
- Various pictures can be seen of the cast of HP-DH filming scenes from the film on this Site. These are the Shell Cottage scenes, most likely.
- They started shooting the forest scenes at Swinley Forest on 10 June 2009.[38]
- Numerous photos of the main casts including pictures of Sophie Thompson (Mafalda Hopkirk), David O'Hara (Albert Runcorn), and Steffan Rhodri (Reg Cattermole) and the set reports from Deathly Hallows filming in Whitehall, London have emerged on-line since 28 June 2009, which appear to be the scene in which Harry, Hermione and Ron infiltrated the Ministry of Magic to obtain the real Horcrux locket from Dolores Umbridge.[39]
- Stunt sequences for Deathly Hallows were shot Thursday (July 23) and Friday night (July 24) in Dartford Tunnel in Kent, England, with Harry and Hagrid's doubles (Daniel Radcliffe and Robbie Coltrane were not filming) driving against the traffic on Sirius's motorcycle. This scene follows the Seven Potters escapade in Privet Drive; Harry's double is also noted to be pointing his wand at an unknown enemy. Photos from the location shoot have emerged on-line since 27th July, 2009.[40]
- According to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, which is hosting a Harry Potter Exhibition, some of David Thewlis' costumes were sent to the UK because Thewlis will need to wear them for the wedding scenes. This filming began on August 10, 2009.[41]
Special effects
- Harry Potter films' producer David Heyman, once revealed in a interview that they will also use a combination of make-up and computer effects to make Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Bonnie Wright and Tom Felton look older for the Epilogue chapter. They are very similar to the special effects that were used in the film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button starring Brad Pitt.
Soundtrack
In November 2010, it was announced that Alexandre Desplat, who composed the score for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, would compose the score for the film.[42] On 29 May, 2011, it was announced that the score for Part 2 was completed. [43]

Wedding designer Jenny Packham is designing outfits for the wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows film. [210]
Plot
The film opens with Lord Voldemort stealing the Elder wand from Albus Dumbledore's tomb and shooting green lightning into the air. It then cuts to Hogwarts which is no longer a colorful castle of magic, but a shadowy concentration camp surrounded by Dementors with the students being marched through the Entrance Courtyard. Severus Snape stands in the top of the castle and watches the students with a blank expression.
At Shell Cottage, Harry Potter sits in front of Dobby's grave, gazing into the one way mirror. He suspects that there is a Horcrux in Bellatrix Lestrange's vault at Gringotts so he, Ron and Hermione strike a deal with Griphook: he will get them into Gringotts Wizarding Bank to find the Horcrux if they give him the Sword of Gryffindor, a bargan to which they reluctantly agree. Harry then questions Ollivander, confirming that the three stolen wands they have, formerly belonging to Bellatrix, Draco and Wormtail will be safe for them to use. Harry then asks him if he knows about the Deathly Hallows and Ollivander claims he does not think they exist, Harry knows he told Voldemort about the Elder wand and is determined to kill Voldemort first.
With Harry and Griphook under the Invisibility Cloak, Hermione disguised as Bellatrix and Ron with bushy facial hair, the trio and Griphook apparate to Gringotts, Harry and Ron needing to use the Imperius Curse on a Goblin to cover up Hermione's unsuccessful impersonation of Bella. They manage to get into the vault despite their disguises being removed by an enchanted waterfall, inside the vault they find Helga Hufflepuff's Cup, the Horcrux, but set off the Geminio curse, causing everything they touch to multiply. Griphook takes the sword from them after they get the cup, saying that he never said he would help them get out, only in. He runs for it and calls security, the trio are almost crushed by the gold and captured but Hermione gets them to jump on the back of a dragon kept as a security measure. Setting the dragon free, the monster kills near every goblin in the banks, crashes through the roof and flies off with the trio on its back. After jumping off the dragon into a lake, Harry has a vision of Voldemort furiously killing Griphook and all the other guards of Gringotts for letting his Horcrux get stolen. Choosing to keep Nagini by his side, he summons his followers and orders them to invade Hogwarts so the Horcrux he hid there will be safe.
Having seen Voldemort thinking of his Horcrux and Hogwarts through their connection, Harry tells the other two they have to go there and destroy it before it can be moved, and that Voldemort seems to be getting more fragile with each Horcrux destroyed. They apparate to Hogsmeade but immediately trigger alarms set up by Death Eaters, waiting for Harry. The trio are almost captured but Aberforth Dumbledore gets them safely into his home and berates them for coming to the village. Harry discovers that it was him who had been watching them through the mirror shard and him who sent Dobby to rescue them before. Aberforth gives them food and tells them to give up on their mission, go into hiding and save themselves. Harry said that he trusted Dumbledore's judgement that the task had to be seen through no matter what, but Aberforth told him that Albus had left them a suicide mission and it was hopeless. After Harry insisted on finishing what he had started, Aberforth summoned Neville Longbottom through a secret passage to bring them into Hogwarts. Bruised and beaten by the Death Eaters of the staff, Neville and most of the students have been hiding in the Room of Requirement all year. They jumped at the idea of helping Harry finish Voldemort but Harry didn't know what the Horcrux looked like or where it was. After saying it might be connected to Ravenclaw, Luna said that Rowena Ravenclaw's Diadem might be it, despite no one alive today seeing it. Ginny arrived and after gazing at Harry for a moment told everyone that Snape was aware of Harry's break in, and wanted everyone in the Great Hall.
In the hall, Snape ordered anyone who knew where Harry was to tell him immediately or face punishment. Harry revealed himself and rebuked Snape for standing where Dumbledore once stood, ordering him to tell the students the truth of how he betrayed them all and killed Dumbledore. The Order Of The Phoenix members then enter the Great Hall. Snape drew his wand in anger but Minerva McGonagall stepped in to defend Harry. Snape and McGonagall face each other for a moment, before McGonagall defeats the two Carrows and chases Snape out of the school. Voldemort then amplified his voice so the castle could hear him, telling the students to give Harry up in exchange for their lives. Pansy Parkinson yells for them to grab him but Ginny and the others surround Harry to protect him. McGonagall orders Filch to take Parkinson and the other Slytherins to the dungeons. While the others stand and fight, she brings the statues of Hogwarts to life to aid them in battle while Filius Flitwick, Horace Slughorn and Molly Weasley cast a shield around the castle. Luna informs Harry that only Helena Ravenclaw would know where the diadem was, and after extensive questioning, Helena told Harry that Voldemort had long ago sought the Diadem too and hidden it in the room "where everything is hidden".
Ron and Hermione went into the Chamber of Secrets to get a Basilisk fang so as to get rid of the cup, after destroying it and almost getting killed by a tsunami that the cup made as a defense mechanism, Ron and Hermione finally shared a passionate kiss. The Death Eaters and Snatchers at this time had arrived and had begun trying to break down the shield but were unable. Voldemort cast a spell so strong the shield dissolved and the Elder Wand cracked a little. Scabior and the Snatchers all tried to get in over a Bridge but Neville caused it to collapse, taking the Snatchers lives with it. The Death Eaters, Dementors, Giants and Acromantulas all attacked Hogwarts with the students, staff and Order of the Phoenix fighting back. Harry headed to the Room of Requirement and stopped to kiss Ginny. He wanted to say he loved her, she held his face and whispered that she knew. In the Room of Requirement, Draco, Gregory Goyle and Blaise Zabini confronted the trio as soon as Harry found the Diadem, Draco asking for his wand back. Harry sensed Draco's reluctance to aid Voldemort but before Draco could speak Goyle cast Fiendfyre on the room. The trio tried desperately to escape and only managed because they used brooms. They saved Draco and Blaise but Goyle was not so lucky and he fell into the fire he had conjured.
After destroying the Diadem, Harry had a vision of Nagini and Voldemort in the Boathouse, with Voldemort telling Lucius to bring him Snape. The trio ran through the devastated castle, avoiding the spells and monsters and attacking the Death Eaters as they went. Fenrir Greyback had killed Lavender Brown and was eating her but Hermione blasted him over the edge of a cliff. Hundreds of Dementors descended on them but Aberforth cast a massive tidal wave Patronus Charm to send them away. The trio hid behind the boathouse and listened to Snape and Voldemort talking, Snape was trying to convince Voldemort that the Elder Wand was the latter's to command, but Voldemort had a different theory. Since Snape had killed Dumbledore the Elder wand served him, not Voldemort. Voldemort slit Snape's throat and ordered Nagini to finish Snape so that he can gain control of the wand and amplified his voice again, ordering his forces to the Forbidden Forest. He then taunted Harry of how his friends had died trying to protect him and then warned Harry that if he did not give up his life, Voldemort would destroy the castle and everyone in it to find him. Harry walked into the boathouse after Voldemort and Nagini had left and bent down beside Snape. Not really knowing why he sympathized with the man he hated so much, he placed his hand on Snape's neck to stop the severe blood flow. At first it seemed Snape was crying, but he was actually leaking memories for Harry to see. Snape whispered for Harry to look at him and that he had the same eyes as his mother, Lily. Then Snape took one last breath and died.
With all of Hogwarts now crumbled and ruined, the trio slowly made their way through the deserted are and found everyone in the Great Hall, morning the deaths of their friends. Padma Patil and Sybill Trelawney tearfully covered up Lavender's body while other covered up several other people who had died fighting the Death Eaters. Ron and Hermione went to the other Weasley's who were all crying over Fred Weasley's death. Harry saw that Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks had too had died in the battle. Unable to stay there, knowing that it was because of him they had died, Harry left the hall and went to the Headmasters office. The office was much emptier and gloomier than Harry remembered but the Pensieve was still there. Not knowing what kind of memories Snape had left him, Harry was willing to take a chance and so he poured them into the Pensive and went in himself.
In the memories Harry saw two young girls, one red head and one brunette. They were Harry's mother and aunt, Harry saw that Lily was controlling a flower with magic, she was happy but Petunia called her a freak and slapped the flower away from her. Then a young Snape came out and revealed himself as a wizard, scaring Petunia away. Throughout their childhood, Snape and Lily were good friends and Snape developed a crush on her. At Hogwarts, Lily was sorted into Gryffindor which disappointed Snape. The two remained friends during their time at school but Lily also made friends with James Potter I, Harry's dad. Harry saw how James frequently and relentlessly bullied Snape which only made it worse when Lily fell for him. As a young adult Death Eater, Snape told Voldemort all he had heard of the prophecy about who could kill him, not knowing Voldemort would target Harry. When Voldemort set off to kill baby Harry and his parents, Snape turned to Albus Dumbledore, the only person who could protect Lily, whom Snape never stopped loving. Snape begged Dumbledore to hide them, Dumbledore agreed on the condition that Snape defect from the Death Eaters and Snape complied immediately. Despite Dumbledore's efforts, Wormtail's betrayal gave away the Potter's location to Voldemort and he killed both parents, but was unable to kill Harry. Snape had gone to Godric's Hollow that night, found Lily dead and broke down, mortified, holding Lily's dead body in his arms. Dumbledore convinced Snape to help him protect Harry should Voldemort return so that Lily would not have died for nothing, which Snape agreed to only if Dumbledore never told anyone his true feelings. Over the years Snape remained at Hogwarts and used Occlumency to hide his loyalty to Dumbledore from Voldemort and everyone else, yet he personally despised Harry as he served as a constant reminder that Lily had never loved him. Eventually Snape grew to hold Harry in some respect, and came to care a great deal for Dumbledore as both a friend and mentor. It was revealed that Snape had saved Dumbledore's life from the curse contained in Marvolo Gaunt's Ring yet it would take effect with about a year. Dumbledore told Snape that he knew of Draco's orders to kill him and to both spare Draco and gain Voldemort's complete trust, Snape had to be the one to kill him. Dumbledore then told Snape that when the killing curse rebounded on Harry as an infant, some of Voldemort's soul squeezed into Harry, which meant Harry too is a Horcrux and that Voldemort must kill him to be mortal and therefore beatable. Snape was supposed to tell Harry this only when all of the other Horcruxes are destroyed but Snape was reluctant. Snape was shocked and insulted that Dumbledore had kept Harry alive all this time just so that he could die at the best time. Dumbledore had underestimated Snape's devotion to Lily but this changed when Snape cast his own Patronus, which was the silver doe, the same as Lily's, prooving to Dumbledore how much he still loved her and to Harry that it had been he who had given him the sword in the Forest of Dean.
Harry now knew what he had to do. He had to die so that Voldemort could be killed. He told Ron and Hermione and they told him not to go. Hermione insisted Harry sobbingly begged to go with him but Harry refused, they had to kill Nagini, the only other Horcrux. After a tearful goodbye, Harry went to the forest. The Golden Snitch he still had opened for him, now that he was ready to die because it "Opened at the close". Inside the snitch was the Resurrection Stone which he used to call back his parents, Remus and Sirius. They emotionally supported him as he walked to his demise. As he neared a clearing he dropped the stone, so it could be lost forever. He found Voldemort and the Death Eaters in the middle of the forest, Rubeus Hagrid had been captured and yelled for Harry to run. Harry stayed where he was and Voldemort slowly raised the Elder wand and fired the killing curse at Harry.
At first it seemed to be over, but Harry woke up in a marble white version of King's Cross Station. His glasses were gone and so were all the injuries he'd suffered. There he found a tiny blood covered version of Voldemort and the spirit of Albus Dumbledore. Dumbledore tied up all the loose ends, telling Harry everything he had withheld in the past including that Harry as not actually dead, rather the killing curse had destroyed the bit of Voldemort inside him, which is what the small bloody thing was. Harry asked if he had to go back but Dumbledore said that was up to him, he could either go back and finish Voldemort or he could continue to the afterlife. Dumbledore concluded that he had always said that "Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it", but he now thought it more obvious that "Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who deserve it."
Harry re-awoke in the forest and feigned death to fool Voldemort. Narcissa Malfoy bent down to him and asked if Draco was still alive, when Harry confirmed, Narcissa lied that Harry was dead. Voldemort and the Death Eaters returned to the castle with Hagrid carrying Harry. Voldemort triumphantly declared Harry's death to the castle and Ginny went insane, screaming in heartbreak and disbelief. She tried to run to Harry but Voldemort kept her and everyone else back. He told them that the time had come for them to either join him or die. Against his better judgement, Draco emerged from the other Hogwarts members to be with his parents and Voldemort gave him a congratulatory hug. Neville stepped forward and after enduring some taunting from Voldemort he declared that they were not finished. He said they may have lot Harry, Fred, Remus, Tonks, Lavender and many others but they had died fighting for liberty and justice. They still had the people they loved in their hearts which was reason enough to keep fighting. Proving himself a true Gryffindor, Neville pulled the sword out of the hat and Harry jumped out of Hagrid's arms. Voldemort, totally thunderstruck, furiously sent more curses at Harry who ran to join the others. The battle recommenced with Voldemort sending Neville flying before he could give Harry the sword. Voldemort chased Harry all over the castle trying to kill him while Ron and Hermione tried to kill Nagini. The Death Eaters were all defeated except Bellatrix who almost killed Ginny. Molly stepped in and took on the maniacal witch. The two had a ferocious duel on a table in the Great Hall, Bellatrix briefly had the upper hand but Molly petrified Bellatrix, and then blew her up. Harry told Voldemort that the Elder wand would never work for Voldemort because it had never been Snape's, he then grabbed Voldemort around the neck and threw both of them over the edge of the castle. Voldemort flew uncontrollably around Hogwarts, crashing into many things with him and Harry wrestling in the air. They crashed in the Entrance Courtyard and dropped their wands. The two enemies desperately crawled to their respective wands and got them at the same time. Voldemort fired another killing curse with Harry countering with a beam of red light. The two spells collided but neither overpowered the other since the Elder wand would not harm Harry and Voldemort still could not be killed. The Malfoys (not caring about the outcome of the war) ran from Hogwarts to make a new life.
Nagini had cornered Ron and Hermione and was ready to kill them but Neville killed her with the sword just in time. With the last Horcrux gone Voldemort was now vulnerable to attack, he cast one final killing cruse at Harry but Harry was able to deflect it with a Disarming Charm, the Elder wand flew from Voldemort's hand and the killing curse rebounded on him. Harry watched as Voldemort slowly disintegrated into nothingness, the war was finally over. While everyone else recovered from the battle, Harry told Ron and Hermione why the Elder Wand did not work for Voldemort. Voldemort had killed Snape but Snape had never beaten Dumbledore, his death had been planned between them so Dumbledore had not died defeated. Draco had disarmed Dumbledore that night against the latter's will, so the wand had turned to him until Harry had taken Draco's wand from him. Now the Elder wand answered to him, but Harry knew that even though it was powerful, all it ever did was get people killed. So he snapped it in half and threw the pieces over the edge of the Viaduct bridge despite Ron and Hermione's obvious lust for the wands ownership. The three friends held hands and gazed dreamily into the distance, wondering what would come next now that it was all over.
Nineteen years later, Harry and Ginny were married with three children Albus Potter, James Potter II and Lily Potter. They were at Platform 9¾ to see Albus and James off to Hogwarts. They met up with Ron and Hermione, also married with two children, Hugo Weasley and Rose Weasley. Draco was there too, married and with a son that looked just like him Scorpius Malfoy. Albus asked his father what would happen if he was in Slytherin, Harry told him that if that happened Slytherin will have gained a wonderful young wizard. He also called him by his full name, Albus Severus Potter. Harry told Albus that he was named after the two men who had been headmaster when he was at Hogwarts, that one of them was a Slytherin and the bravest man who had ever lived. Albus was still skeptical so Harry told him that he could choose which house he wanted to be put in because the Sorting Hat puts people in the house they want. Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny watched their children leave for school on the Hogwarts Express. Their adventures at Hogwarts might be over but they were now part of something new and even more amazing, guiding their children through their own adventures.
Differences between the film and the book
Shell Cottage
- Mr. Ollivander appears to be familiar with the Deathly Hallows, while in the book, he doesn't understand what the term means.
Gringotts break-in
- The whole incident with Travers and the bloody beggar isn't displayed
- The items in the Lestrange's vault are only under the effect of Gemino and not Flagrante
- Hermione comes up with the idea of releasing the dragon and does so, not Harry.
- When Griphook is killed by Voldemort, the Sword of Gryffindor disappears from his hands.
Returning to Hogwarts
- Snape and Death Eaters Alecto and Amycus Carrow watch the Hogwarts students marching across the Entrance Courtyard and the Grand Staircase.[211]
- Harry, through his connection to Voldemort, sees a memory of the Grey Lady at Hogwarts, making Harry realise that Ravenclaw is connected to one of Voldemort's Horcruxes.
- When Harry, Ron and Hermione enter Hogsmeade, they don't go under the Invisibility Cloak and the Death Eaters don's send Dementors; instead the trio run across a locked gate and Aberforth brings them inside the Hog's Head.
- Aberforth doesn't tell Harry about his backstory with Albus and Arianna.
- When arriving at Hogwarts, Harry bursts into the Great Hall furious at Snape for standing in Dumbledore's place, even demanding that Snape tell everyone how he killed Dumbledore.
- Professor McGonagall duels Snape in the Great Hall in front of the entire school before he turns to black "smoke", smashing through the window in the Great Hall.
- The protective shield the Professors place around the school disintegrates anything that attempt to run through it. During the beginning of the Battle of Hogwarts, it instantly kills three Snatchers.
- During the start of the battle, Harry and Ginny kiss, the directors placed this in to show their relationship and love for each other.
- When Voldemort destroys the shield around Hogwarts, the Elder Wand cracks a bit by the amount of power used.
- Pius Thicknesse is killed by Voldemort after he interupts his concentration with an unwanted interjection.
- Harry and Luna go to Ravenclaw Tower, but not inside the common room, just outside of it.
- The Grey Lady tells Harry where to find the Ravenclaw Diadem and she has hidden it instead of Tom, to prevent him turning it into a horcrux, which happened, and wants to destroy it,too.
- A scene is added in Hogwarts where Ron and Hermione enter the Chamber of Secrets to acquire a Basilisk's fang to destroy Hufflepuff's cup.
- In the Chamber of Secrets the piece of Voldemort's soul creates a tsunami, after the tsunami is gone Ron and Hermione turn to each other and kiss passionately.
Entering the Room of Requirement
- Vincent Crabbe doesn't appear in the film due to the drug charges against actor Jamie Waylett and Gregory Goyle will die in his place.[212]
- Blaise Zabini is present in the Room of Requirement with Draco and Goyle as a replacement for Crabbe.
- Draco describes using his mother's wand as powerful, but not quite the same as his old one.
- The diadem is in a case on a table in the Room of Requirement, not on a bust of an old warlock.
- The diadem is taken out of the Room of Requirement by Harry and Harry destroys the diadem with a Basilisk fang. Ron then kicks it into the Fiendfyre.
The Battle of Hogwarts
- Lavender Brown is killed during the Battle by Fenrir Greyback. He is seen crowding over her, eating her flesh while still in human form. Trelawney confirms her death during the temporary ceasefire. Greyback is then blasted out a window and over a cliff, presumably to his death by Hermione rather than being defeated by Ron and Nevile later on.
- Aberforth and Kingsley, led a group of combatants across the Entrance Courtyard and they fend off hundreds of Dementors during the Battle of Hogwarts with a tidal wave patronus.
- It appears as though Fred is killed by an unknown female Death Eater and not Augustus Rookwood as is speculated to have occurred in the book.
- The scene where McGonagall leads desks to battle is omitted from the film.
- Death Eaters burn down the Hogwarts Quidditch pitch.
- Buckbeak, Grawp, centaurs and house-elves don't appear during the Battle.
- Neville shows feelings for Luna two times in the film. The first time he is searching for her in the castle and the second time is after the battle when they sit awkwardly with each other.
- The final battle between Harry and Voldemort will be extended, and while other parts of the second phase of the Battle of Hogwarts will be shown, the primary focus will be centered on Harry and Voldemort.
- Nagini is not in a protective sphere. Instead of that, her body is protected. When Ron launches a curse at Nagini, the curse passed through her body and then struck in the staircase. Also when Harry reveals himself that he is alive, he launches Confringo to Nagini and it struck in the several death eaters that are behind Voldemort.
- Snape's death will not take place in the Shrieking Shack, but in the redesigned Boathouse that can see the castle burning. Art director Andrew Ackland-Snow explained why: "We wanted to change a bit where Snape dies. In the book, he dies in the Shrieking Shack, and we wanted to get him out from, not a conventional interior, but from that kind of box, to do it in a more dramatic atmosphere. We asked J.K. if she agreed for that to happen in there [...] and she loved it. Besides, it's a very romantic place to die. Snape dies in a extremely good way, I gotta say".[213]
- Voldemort slashes Snape's throat open with the Elder Wand using Sectumsempra, before ordering Nagini to "finish him". Nagini's attack is not seen, but Snape's screams are heard and the windows of the Boathouse are splattered with his blood as Harry, Ron and Hermione watch on in horror.
- Scabior and the other Snatchers duel Neville on the Covered Bridge, and they are killed when Neville cast a curse on the bridge supports which causes half of the bridge to collapse.
- There are a number of differences in Snape's flashback[214]:
- Snape and Lily are shown to be good friends as children.
- Another scene shows Lily telling Harry, still an infant, to be brave and that he is loved.
- A scene is added where Snape comes to Godric's Hollow, after Lily and James were killed in 1981, to see them dead, even collapsing and sobbing when seeing Lily dead. He then cradles her in his arms then sees Harry sitting in his crib watching on. In this scene it sounds Nicholas Hooper's "Dumbledore's Farewell."
- While Snape's patronus is shown being a doe, it is not explained how he knew that Harry and Hermione were there.
- Harry tells Ron and Hermione that he is a Horcrux, and that he must die. Hermione then hugged him and wanted to go with him.
- Instead of Harry being naked when arriving at King's Cross he is instead fully clothed; he also sees Voldemort in the image of a red, slimy breathing fetus.
- After having pulled the Gryffindor Sword from the Sorting Hat, Neville is stunned by Voldemort. He then wakes up in the Great Hall where the Battle started again and takes the sword to kill Nagini.
- Bellatrix and Molly Weasley duel on the top of a table after Bellatrix attacks Ginny. Molly kills her using the killing curse before tearing her body apart with what is likely the Reductor Curse. The power of Molly's killing curse causes Bellatrix's body to become sunken and sallow immediately before it is obliterated by the second spell.
- Trelawney scene of throwing orbs at death eaters was omitted.
- Both Ron and Hermione try to stab Nagini with a basilisk's fang.
- Harry and Voldemort duel throughout Hogwarts after Harry reveals himself. He fires Confringo at Nagini then makes a run for it. Voldemort fires explosions at Harry, then Disapparates with Nagini. Harry is hiding, then when Voldemort walks up the Grand Staircase, Harry fires a spell. Voldemort fires spells at Harry, Disapparates and tries to kill Harry with a Killing Curse but the spells lock. Nagini is about to pounce on Harry, but he throws the tendrils above the ceiling causing it to collapse. Voldemort fires a wave of dark energy, but Harry jumps off the staircase and runs through the Astronomy Tower with Voldemort in pursuit. He fires a spell, which Harry deflects onto the bridge. Voldemort then grabs Harry using his cloak to restrain him. Then he proceeds to strangle and physically beat Harry.
- Harry grabs Voldemort and throws them both off of the roof of the castle. Voldemort apparates them both away.
- Harry and Voldemort duel at the Entrance Courtyard instead of the Great Hall.
- After being struck with the Killing Curse, Voldemort disintegrates to ash in a similar manner to Quirrell in Philosopher's Stone and his ashes are blown away.
- After the conclusion of the battle. Harry, Ron and Hermione stand on the remains of the Viaduct. Harry snaps the Elder Wand in two and throws it over the side.
- Harry does not use the Elder Wand to repair his original wand.
- Harry does not go to the Headmaster's Office after the battle.
Character omissions
- Mundungus Fletcher
- Nearly Headless Nick
- Peeves
- Parvati Patil
- Lee Jordan
- Colin Creevey
- Phineas Nigellus Black
- Everard
- Dexter Fortescue
- Dilys Derwent
- Firenze
- Kreacher
- Grawp
- Buckbeak
- Bane
- Peter Pettigrew
- Vincent Crabbe
Apparently the film-makers intended to put Pettigrew in Part 2, but decided not to, as David Yates has announced that he will not be appearing. This has led to the belief of the possibility that Dobby killed him despite their initial intents to have him merely stunned, or that Voldemort kills him after he returns to Malfoy Manor. There is no mention of him in Part Two and he appears only briefly in stock footage from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
