- "The End Begins"
- — Official tagline
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is the first installment of a two-part film based on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling.
David Yates, who directed the preceding two films, is directing both parts, with Steve Kloves returning to script [1]. The first part is currently scheduled for release in November 2010, with the second following in July 2011.[2] Production of the two films occurred concurrently,[3] and treated as if it were one film.[4] The idea to split the films had been around since the middle of 2007,[1] but only really came into serious consideration after producer David Heyman was able to talk to writer Steve Kloves when the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike ended and Heyman had Rowling's approval.[4]
On March 12, 2008, Warner Bros. additionally confirmed that the movie would be split into two, to do justice to the book.[5]David Yates, director of Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince will return to direct and Steve Kloves is going to write the screenplay. According to Warner Bros. executive Alan F. Horn it will allow "an extra hour and a half to celebrate what this franchise has been and do justice to all the words and ideas in the amazing story."[3] Heyman described the workings behind the split: "Deathly Hallows is so rich, the story so dense and there is so much that is resolved that, after discussing it with Rowling, we came to the conclusion that two parts were needed."[3] Due to the WGA strike, Kloves was not able to start work on the script until it ended.[6]
Before David Yates was officially chosen to direct the film, others had expressed an interest in the job. Alfonso Cuarón, director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, had said that he would be "tempted" to return to direct.[7]Guillermo del Toro, who passed on Prisoner of Azkaban, had expressed interest in directing Deathly Hallows,[8] but an increased workload ruled him out of the project.[9]
Heyman noted that the films will be a closer recreation of the books than the previous films because of the length a two-part adaptation entails.[10] Daniel Radcliffe said: "This is a road movie, particularly in Part One of the film. People have been so used to seeing Harry Potter at Hogwarts and we're just not there for the first part of the film. That seems to have really freshened things up, and hopefully will get people seeing the films with fresh eyes again, because it's just a totally different look when you're not just sat in the same room the whole time."[10]
Although Yates had retained composer Nicholas Hooper for Half-Blood Prince, John Williams (who composed the scores to the first three films) had expressed interest in returning to score the film - however he did not state which part he would be contributing to. In January 2010 Alexandre Desplat, a French composer, was confirmed to produce the score for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. [11]
Yates and Heyman have noted that some of the events of this film had an effect on the way the sixth film was written.[12]
The part will end as Lord Voldemort obtains the Elder Wand from Albus Dumbledore's tomb. [13]
In the wake of the success of the 3-D film Avatar in late 2009, Warner Bros. announced that both Deathly Hallows films will be converted to 3-D for showing in 3-D.[14] A standard 2-D version of the film will also be circulated, as stated in the most recent trailer. On October 9, 2010, it was announced that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 would not be released in 3-D because the film would not be complete before the release. It is possible it could be re-released in the near future as the conversion to 3-D has already begun.[15]
Synopsis
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final adventure in the Harry Potter film series, is a motion picture event, told in two full-length parts. Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the Horcruxes—the keys to Voldemort’s immortality. On their own, without the guidance or protection of their professors, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. But there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart.
Meanwhile, the Wizarding world has become a dangerous place for all enemies of the Dark Lord. The long-feared war has begun and Voldemort’s Death Eaters seize control of the Ministry of Magic and even Hogwarts, terrorizing and arresting anyone who might oppose them. But the one prize they still seek is the one most valuable to Voldemort: Harry Potter. The Chosen One has become the hunted one as Voldemort’s followers look for Harry with orders to bring him to the Dark Lord…alive.
Harry’s only hope is to find the Horcruxes before Voldemort finds him. But as he searches for clues, he uncovers an old and almost forgotten tale—the legend of the Deathly Hallows. And if the legend turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he seeks. Little does Harry know that his future has already been decided by his past when, on that fateful day, he became “the Boy Who Lived.” No longer just a boy, Harry Potter is drawing ever closer to the task for which he has been preparing since the day he first stepped into Hogwarts: the ultimate battle with Voldemort.
Plot
Part I
The film opens as Hermione, Harry, and Ron simultaneously prepare to begin searching for and destroying Voldemort's Horcruxes. Meanwhile, Severus Snape arrives at Malfoy Manor and tells Voldemort the Order of the Phoenix will move Harry from Privet Drive. Voldemort borrows Lucius Malfoy's wand to avoid doing battle with "twin wands".
The Order and 7 others (Ron, Hermione, Bill, Fred and George Weasley, Fleur Delacour, and Mundungus Fletcher,) arrive to meet Harry. They drink Polyjuice Potion to become Harry's copies. Harry, the Order, and the copies leave Privet Drive They are intercepted almost immediately by Death Eaters, and are scattered. Voldemort appears, but Harry's wand defeats Voldemort's borrowed one and they arrive safely at the Burrow. All but Mad-Eye Moody and Hedwig, who were killed, and Mundungus, who disapparated when he saw Voldemort, made it, but George was injured during the assault and loses his ear. Ron convinces Harry to remain at the Burrow until after Bill and Fleur's wedding, before leaving to find and destroy the Horcruxes.
Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour arrives at the Burrow and distributes the items from Dumbledore's last will and testament to Ron (the Deluminator), Hermione (personal copy of "The Tales of Beetle the Bard", which has a strange symbol in it), and Harry (the first Snitch Harry caught and the missing Sword of Gryffindor). During Bill and Fleurs wedding, Harry sees Xenophilius Lovegood and notices the strange symbol on his necklace. He also talks to some gossipers, and learns that the Dumbledore family once lived in Harry's hometown, Godric's Hollow. A Patronus message sent by Kingsley Shacklebolt appears and warns that the Ministry has fallen, Scrimgeour is dead, and that "they are coming". Death Eaters appear, and Harry, Ron and Hermione disapparate to London.
Taking refuge in a cafe, they discuss their immediate plans, but before they can leave two Death Eaters arrive. The trio win the duel and escape to Grimmauld Place, where they discover that Regulus Arcturus Black, Sirius' younger brother, is the R.A.B. from the false locket found at the end of Half-Blood Prince. Kreacher reveals that the real locket was in the house, but Mundungus took it. Harry sends Kreacher to retrieve Mundungus, who explains that Umbridge extorted it from him in return for not revoking his peddler's license. They plan to break into the Ministry, now under the eye of Death Eaters, to recover it.
They capture and impersonate three Ministry members and enter the ministry of Magic. They locate and stun Umbridge, take back the locket, and apparate to a forest. They attempt to destroy the locket, but it proves indestructible to their magic, so they are forced to take turns wearing it despite its negative effect on their morale. While wearing it, Harry sees a vision of Voldemort interrogating and killing Gregorovitch, a wand-maker, and going off in search of a mysterious teenage wizard that Gregorovitch said robbed his shop many years ago.
As they apparate around the countryside to camp in secluded places, Ron becomes increasingly suspicious that Harry and Hermione are becoming more than friends. While wearing the locket, he overhears Hermione discover that, if they can find the Sword of Gryffindor they can use it to destroy the Horcruxes, as Dumbledore intended. Realizing that they must find yet another thing they don't know the location of,Ron, coupled with his increasing suspicion and resentment, decides to leave the group. Hermione takes his exit very badly.
Harry and Hermione decide to visit Godric's Hollow,to try and find Bathilda Bagshot, a magical historian who "knew the Dumbledores better than anyone". They find a church graveyard, and Hermione discovers that a man named Ignotus Peverell's tombstone features the same symbol on Lovegood's necklace and in Dumbledore's book. However, Harry then discovers his parent´s grave and lays a christhmas wreath in it. An old woman approaches them. Harry guesses that the woman is Bagshot, and they follow her to her home. Harry sees a picture of the teen from Gregorovitch's memory, and Bagshot takes him to the attic while Hermione wanders downstairs. She finds signs of a bloody attack, and realizes that the real Bagshot must be dead; the woman with Harry decomposes before his eyes into Voldemort's snake Nagini, and after a fight Harry and Hermione escape with the only casualty being Harry's wand. Hermione says that the teen from Gregorovitch's memory is Gellert Grindelwald.
Back in the forest, Harry discovers that the snitch dumbledore gave him has a clue on it "open at the close" and dosent understand what it means. He then sees a patronus Charm and follows it to a frozen pond. He discovers the Sword of Gryffindor at the bottom, but as he swims to reach it, the locket goes berserk and attempts to drown him. Ron appears, saves him, and grabes the sword. Harry convinces Ron to try and destroy the Horcrux. The locket, however, intimidates Ron by showing him his deepest fears; like spiders, his family preffering Harry, and Harry and Hermione kissing passionately. Ron angrily attacks the locket with the sword, destroying it, and the two return to the tent. Hermione is furious with Ron for leaving and returning like nothing happened, but the trio decide to visit Mr. Lovegood to find out about the symbol they have been seeing everywhere.
At the Lovegood house, Mr. Lovegood tells them that the symbol they have been seeing represents the Deathly Hallows. He teaches them about the Deathly Hallows--an invincible Elder Wand, a Resurrecting Stone, and an Invisibility Cloak--and tells them the story of the three Peverell Brothers (The Tales of Beetle the Bard), who possessed the items. When the group attempts to leave, Mr. Lovegood reveals that the Death Eaters have taken Luna, and he must keep them there until they arrive to see his daughter again. They escape in the ensuing attack, and disapparate back to the forest, where a group of Snatchers are waiting to capture them and take them to Malfoy Manor to collect a reward that was set for Harry. Before their capture, Hernione casts a Stinging Hex to disfigure Harry´s face. Harry then has another vision and sees Voldemort finding Grindelwald. Grindelwald tells him that Dumbledore had a duel with him many years ago and is now the master of the Elder Wand (a Deathly Hallow).
At the Manor Bellatrix sees the Sword of Gryffindor, which she believes resides in her vault at Gringott's Bank. She imprisons Harry and Ron in the cellar, where they find Luna, Ollivander, and a goblin; Bellatrix tortures Hermione to try to find out how they stole the sword. Harry summons Dobby (A house elf from Harry's past), who frees Luna and Ollivander before breaking Harry and Ron out. They go to rescue Hermione but despite winning the duels with Dobby's help, Bellatrix throws a knife that stabs and kills Dobby as they disapparate. Harry gives Dobby a proper burial on the beach where they appear.
The movie ends with Voldemort opening Dumbledore's tomb, taking the Elder Wand and testing its power.
Filming
"Years ago, we briefly — and seriously — considered doing Goblet of Fire as two films. So this concept is not altogether new. As for Deathly Hallows, I intuited — almost from the first moments I began reading it and certainly once I'd finished — that to realize the story in a single film was going to be a tall order. Others in 'the group' felt similarly. So the idea of two films began to get kicked around as early as late summer of 2007. We didn't take it lightly. But ultimately everyone felt that despite the challenges it would present, it was the most sound creative decision. I'm sure some will think we're crazy. My wife looked at me cross-eyed when I first mentioned it. But I'm really excited about it because it should allow us to stretch a bit with the characters and give them the proper send-off. The story is highly emotional and those moments deserve time to breathe. And, personally, I feel we owe it to Jo — in order to preserve the integrity of the work — and the fans — for their loyalty all these years — to give them the best and most complete experience possible."[1] |
Pre-production began on January 26, 2009, and filming began on February 19, 2009 at Leavesden Film Studios, where the previous six films had been shot, and Pinewood Studios.[16][17]
Eduardo Serra is the cinematographer.[18] Yates said that the film will be shot "with loads of hand-held cameras. I want to shake things up every time I go into this world. I like experimenting as we go along."[19]
During production at Leavesden, Radcliffe's stunt double David Holmes suffered a serious spinal injury during filming of an aerial sequence. Holmes fell to the ground following an explosion which was part of the stunt.[20][21][22][23] It is probable that the aerial sequence and explosion is the Battle over Little Whinging. This left Holmes paralyzed from the waist down and it is reported he will be unable to ever walk again.[24]
Shooting Schedule
David Heyman gave additional details on the filming schedule for the two films:
"We finished the sixth film which'll be coming out next summer and we start filming the seventh which we'll be breaking into two parts for a 54 week shoot starting in February (2009)."[25][26]
Test shoots were done on January 26, 2009 as Emma Watson revealed on her Official Website. [27][28] Unfortunately, just days later it was reported that a stunt double for Daniel Radcliffe was seriously injured while testing an explosion scene.[29]
Filming for both parts started officially on February 15, 2009[30] and ended on June 12, 2010. [31]
Filming on Location
- On April 21, 2009, photos of Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) with a tent camped in a open field along with the Deathly Hallows staff and crew have been circling around the web. The report says that it was shot in Scotland.[32]
- On the same day, The-Leaky-Cauldron.org first reported that location filming for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has been set in Piccadilly Circus and Shaftesbury Avenue portion of London, England.
- Hundreds of photos of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint including the crew & staff & 200+ extras for the film production has been released on the net during shooting hours from midnight to 6 a.m. and on the next day, April 22. [33][34][35]
- On April 22, BBC News reported that Deathly Hallows filming on the coastline of Wales will take place from 11th to 15th May 2009 on Freshwater West beach of the Pembrokeshire National Park where the scenes for Shell Cottage are said to be shot.[36]
- On 24th of April, The T-L-C website released the first photos of the Shell Cottage while under construction on the coastline in the Pembrokeshire area of Wales.[37]
- Various pictures can be seen of the cast of HP-DH filming scenes from the film on this Site. These are the Shell Cottage scenes, most likely.
- They started shooting the forest scenes at Swinley Forest on 10 June 2009.[38]
- Numerous photos of the main casts including pictures of Sophie Thompson (Mafalda Hopkirk), David O'Hara (Albert Runcorn), and Steffan Rhodri (Reg Cattermole) and the set reports from Deathly Hallows filming in Whitehall, London have emerged online since 28 June 2009, which appear to be the scene in which Harry, Hermione and Ron infiltrated the Ministry of Magic to obtain the real Horcrux locket from Dolores Umbridge.[39]
- Stunt sequences for Deathly Hallows were shot Thursday (July 23) and Friday night (July 24) in Dartford Tunnel in Kent, England, with Harry and Hagrid's doubles (Daniel Radcliffe and Robbie Coltrane were not filming) driving against the traffic on Sirius's motorcycle. This scene follows the Seven Potters escapade in Privet Drive; Harry's double is also noted to be pointing his wand at an unknown enemy. Photos from the location shoot has emerged online since 27th July, 2009.[40]
- According to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, which is hosting a Harry Potter Exhibition, some of David Thewlis' costumes were sent to the UK because Thewlis will need to wear them for the wedding scenes. This filming began on August 10, 2009.[41]
Special Effects
- For the Seven Potters sequence, Oliver Phelps mentioned on his twitter that a mixture of special effects[42] and makeup[43] has been used to make the actors' face look like Daniel Radcliffe, using a VFX MOVA facial capture scan with 29 cameras and UV makeup.[44]
The Soundtrack
In January 2010, Alexandre Desplat was confirmed to produce the score for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.[45] The French composer will record the music in London studios with the London Symphony Orchestra. He will score until September.
«We will start this summer, it will take me all summer, I will not have many holidays, but again it's for good reason, for the soundtrack. I would take every opportunity to use the fabulous theme composed by John Williams, I'd say it has not sufficiently used in the latest movies, so if I have the opportunity and if the footage allows me, I'm going to arrange it, to give it another meaning... Well, I have no obligation to use it but I shall make it with great honor and pleasure.» - Alexandre Desplat - Interview of the French composer by Cinézik.
The soundtrack will be released on November 16, 2010 in U.K. and the U.S. [46]

Staff and crew
Both parts will be written by Steve Kloves, who wrote the first, second, third, fourth, and sixth films, and directed by David Yates, who directed the previous two films. David Heyman and David Barron are producing both parts.[266]
Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Eduardo Serra has been appointed to be the Director of Photography.[267]
Special effects will supervised by Paul J. Franklin.[268]
Stuart Craig will again design new sets for both films. New sets include the Malfoy Manor, the wedding marquee, the Tottenham Court Road café, Sirius's bedroom at 12 Grimmauld Place, Dolores Umbridge's Ministry office, Ministry courtroom, Shell Cottage, Godric's Hollow, Bathilda Bagshot's home, the Lovegood home, the Lestrange vault in Gringotts, Ravenclaw Tower, and possibly other new parts of Hogwarts castle.
Wedding designer Jenny Packham is designing outfits for the wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows film. [269]
Differences from the book
- The movie will begin with a scene with the Minister for Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, making a speech about how times will "grow darker still" to Ministry employees.
- There is a scene with Neville, Luna, and Ginny on the Hogwarts Express.
- It is thought that a chase scene on land will be added into the Seven Potters fight sequence.
- A chase scene with the Snatchers will take place .
- Harry Potter will not be disguised as "Barny Weasley" during the wedding.
- In an interview, director of the film David Yates announced that a scene will be added where Hermione Granger and Harry Potter are dancing, and, while dancing, they reveal some secrets about each other. [270]
- A scene will be added where Hermione Granger leaves her home.
- The use of characters omitted from previous films such as Bill and Charlie Weasley, Fleur Delacour, and Rufus Scrimgeour will likely require the addition of some exposition to explain their presence. In addition, some changes made for the Half-Blood Prince film, such as the circumstances of Harry hiding the potions textbook, and the destruction of The Burrow, may also result in some additions.
- A scene will be added showing Lord Voldemort searching for Harry in the Forest of Dean.
- David Heyman informed Mugglenet in a recent podcast that an additional scene will be added to end Part 1 and still keep intrigue so people will watch Part 2.
- Harry and Hermione will not be under the guise of Polyjuice Potion when they venture into Godric's Hollow.
- In the book, Harry was attacked by Nagini in a dark room in Bathilda Bagshot's home. In the film, the attack somehow moves into the home next door into a children's play room.
- In the book, the trio surrender to the Snatchers and are taken to Malfoy Manor, but in the film, a chase scene will be added.
- In the book, Mr. Ollivander didn't know anything about the Deathly Hallows. In the film, he seems to have some basic knowledge of them.
- In the trailer, Harry lets Hedwig fly around outside while he is alone at 4 Privet Drive, but in the book, Harry does not do this. Also, Hedwig returns while Harry and Hagrid are being pursued and blocks the Killing Curse a Death Eater casts at Harry. This was done to make her death more meaningful as well as having to avoid including Stan Shunpike.
- In the book, Harry says "Voldemort" prompting the Snatchers to show up. In the film, Xenophilius Lovegood says it in his home during Harry, Ron, and Hermione's visit with him, resulting in the chase where they are ultimately caught and taken to Malfoy Manor.
- Peter Pettigrew is not killed by his own hand, he is stunned by Dobby, as it would be deemed too graphic for a man to kill himself, even if it wasn't his choice.
- In the book, Bellatrix only tortures Hermione. In the film, she tortures her, uses a whip on her, and engraves the word "Mudblood" on her arm.
- Harry sends Kreacher to find Mundungus Fletcher before hearing the tale of Regulus Black's death. And Kreacher returns with Dobby as well.
- Dobby is seen more in the film than he is in the book. In the book, he only appears at Malfoy Manor to save Harry and everyone. In the film, he brings Mundungus Fletcher to Harry at 12 Grimmauld Place along with Kreacher. Dobby is still wearing his ragged dress even though he is free.
- Harry and Lupin's argument does not take place at Grimmauld Place.
- Viktor Krum is not present at, and does not argue with Xenophilius Lovegood at the wedding.
- Remus Lupin tells Harry, Ron, and Hermione to leave when the Death Eaters attack the wedding.
- Rufus Scrimgeour arrives to give Harry, Ron, and Hermione their bequests from Dumbledore's will the morning of the wedding.
- There is not birthday party for Harry Potter at The Burrow.
- Hermione wears a red dress to the wedding as opposed to the lilac one she wears in the book.
- When Voldemort takes Lucius Malfoy's wand, he snaps the snake's head off and throws it on the table
- Harry and Ginny's kiss takes place in the Burrow's kitchen instead of Ginny's bedroom. George interrupts them instead of Ron bursting in on them.
- Harry and Hagrid leave 4 Privet Drive and head straight for the Burrow instead of to the Tonks' parents, Andromeda and Ted's house.
- Tonks's pregnancy has been brushed aside. It is possible that it will be explored more in Part 2 seeing as Luke Newberry has been cast as Teddy Lupin in the epilogue.
- Instead of hearing Hermione tell the Tale of the Three Brothers, animation will be shown while she reads the story.
- The Death Eater seen on the train tracks stopping the Hogwarts Express in the trailer is said to be looking for Harry. It was believed by some people that it was when Luna was kidnapped from the train.
- As when the wedding is attacked, Harry sees Ginny fighting a Death Eater and tries to run to her but is stopped by Lupin whom tells Harry to leave.
- Harry's disguises as Albert Runcorn wear off him quicker than Ron's or Hermione's, as when in the elevator of the Ministry of Magic Harry makes his Patronus like he did in the third film.
- Cho Chang, Katie Bell and Cormac McLaggen are all seen on the Hogwarts Express, even though they should have graduated in Half Blood Prince.
