Featured articles

I think that we should set up a voting system for Featured articles on the wiki just like they do on Wikipedia... Anybody agree? —Animagi/Prongs 03:51, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

  • Yes definately. And maybe a collaboration one too? -NighthawkLeader 05:28, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
I think that can all be done here for now. There no need for subpages or anything. John Reaves (talk) 06:53, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
OK, then lets just nominate any article that we feel is the best here and see how others respond... Like I feel that Quidditch is good, I've added images, and cleaned it up from its former version... —Animagi/Prongs 23:23, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
Support -NighthawkLeader 07:39, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
Support If there are no objections, we should go ahead and promote this article.John Reaves (talk) 03:39, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Actually, Quidditch was the FA for a while before it was changed, just check the main page on the featured article section it is listed under the recently featured spot. Oh, and I thought we were using Harry Potter Wiki talk:Featured articles for voting for featured articles. - User:Scrimgeour (Sorry I forgot to sign in, but that was me that added the above message)

Userboxes

Are there any userboxes on this Wikia? (I can't seem find any). If there aren't would it be ok to make a few and create a userbox category? -NighthawkLeader 05:31, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Why don't we just focus more on the content than on userboxes? If you do create any, make them serve an informative purpose like {{User admin}} or {{User bureaucrat}}. Nothing like "This user like carrots" or anything equally dumb. John Reaves (talk) 06:53, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
Anyone who has userbox experience: please take a look at these boxes, they wouldn't work when I added them. John Reaves (talk) 08:59, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Which boxes exactly? The admin and bureaucrat ones still work perfectly -NighthawkLeader 07:02, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
{{User admin}} - I think I've fixed it though. It was missing |} at the end so it was taking over the content of the page it was on. Are there any other userboxes you know of? We should get them categorized. John Reaves (talk) 07:20, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
I haven't been able to find any others except for those two (apart from the custom ones on my userpage). I've set up Category:Userboxes in case there are any others out there. -NighthawkLeader 07:32, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
You should move the ones you've created to the template namespace and place them in the cat. John Reaves (talk) 07:45, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
OK I'll do that now Nighthawk Leader

Collab

(This is a suggestion from an IP moved from the template) How about Hermione Granger. That needs to be expanded.

Tedious work that needs to be done

Update: Done! 00:50, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

We need to tag all of the Wikibooks Muggles' Guide pages for deletion. I go through and delete as much as I can, but it would be nice to get them in a central location (Category:Candidates for deletion). So place {{db}} on the page and it'll automatically add that cat. Also, we need to start removing "spoiler" from articles as it has been usurped by MediaWiki:Sitenotice. John Reaves (talk) 09:03, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Update: I've deleted a handful of spoiler templates. Now there are only 143 left. John Reaves (talk) 09:09, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

There is an easier way to do this than by hand.. Go to Wikipedia and register yourself for semi auto AutoWikiBrowser and wait for permission to use the program. Then follow the instructions here, inorder to use the MWiki-Browser, somewhat like the AWB, but can be used for all wikis.. —Animagi/Prongs 03:16, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure that only works on Windows; I use a Mac. John Reaves (talk) 03:20, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I have removed all of the spoiler tags, and I think I marked all of the Muggles' Guide pages for deletion. - User:Scrimgeour

Search logo proposition

Mailing list

I encourage all to subscribe to the Harry Potter Wiki mailing list. John Reaves (talk) 08:28, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Favorites icon

In addition to the search logo we are suggesting above, I think that we should also upload a Favorites icon, perhaps something along the lines of a H for Harry Potter? —Animagi/Prongs 04:56, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

What about "HP" with the lightening bolt like 'P'? Is that copyright by WB? If it is, we might be able the created a reasonable derivation. John Reaves (talk) 04:59, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Another good possibility... —Animagi/Prongs 05:11, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
What ever we pick, I think can use this to create it. (I'm posting it here before I forget. John Reaves (talk) 05:27, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Well, I have tried to upload a HP logo with the HP here ( File:Favicon.ico) but it somehow doesn't work.. —Animagi/Prongs 22:01, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
You can download the font which Warner Bros use to create their HP logos from lots of websites. You can use that to make your logo. :)

Voting on deletion

For know, see Category:Candidates for deletion and if you oppose a deletion, create a section on the category's talk page for voting. Also, {{cfd}} is making pages all screwy when added, anyone that feels competent enough, should take a look. John Reaves (talk) 05:28, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm back

Okay, after my over-extended leave, I've finally found enough time to return to my administrative duties here. Many thanks to you guys for keeping the place alive.

To those who don't know me (and I'm guessing that's all of you), I'm Chosen One, one of the first generation editors here. I'll be happy to help out once I've settled down again. Cheers! The Chosen One (Choose me!) 09:42, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Collab of the Week

As we haven't had any collab suggestions recently, I'd like to nominate Fleur Delacour. It didn't have much content before, and now, somebody merely copied the WP version to here. The Chosen One (Choose me!) 13:51, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

New message bar

There's been a change in the format of the message bar that comes up when you receive a new message and there apparently might be some glitches in it. So I'm asking every one to ask me or someone else to leave them a message and then report back with your experience here (even if nothing seems weird). Please include your browser and operating system in the report. John Reaves (talk) 21:20, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Mozilla Firefox

New Message Screenshoot

Screenshot.

I have Mozilla Firefox and the owl image is cut off a bit at the bottom.. But great idea of using the owl! —Animagi/Prongs 04:41, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

That's the way I designed it. It seemed like File:Owlpost.jpeg was too tall for a message box and that it looks pretty cool. John Reaves (talk) 04:55, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
What do people think about removing the period? John Reaves (talk) 04:56, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
I think the image is cool. I'd prefer that the period remain, however. Nice work, John. :p The Chosen One (Choose me!) 08:36, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Sitenotice close

Good idea for using "banish" instead of dismiss on the spoiler temp. I was thinking, perhaps we could do something like "mischief managed" or is that not really relevant...? —Animagi/Prongs 19:39, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

I'll try it out and reset the notice. John Reaves (talk) 20:23, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
"Mischief managed" might be a tad confusing to new editors. Better stick with something simple. The Chosen One (Choose me!) 22:29, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
I think something like the original ("banish") or "reducto" would be the best. We should come up with a list and alternate them when we have announcements. John Reaves (talk) 22:35, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
Is the notice close tag really not supposed to show up for anons? Because when I wasn't logged in, it didn't.
There should still be the spoiler warning, but I don't think there is the option to dismiss it as an anon. John Reaves (talk) 16:18, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Can you Delete this?

Or put it on a subject for deletion. The Article about Egypt. We already have a article entitled Africa and it contains a lot more information, and I don't think the Egypt one is needed. - Lemniwinks

You can place {{db|reason}} on whatever article your talking about. John Reaves (talk) 20:48, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Black Family Tree img

This image is the one currently being used by HPLexicon. As such, it is under copyright. When it was first uploaded in Feb 2006, some users complained about the copyvio, among them admin Hermione1980, but nobody got around to creating a Black tree image of our own. As I'm a dummy when it comes to Paint or Photoshop, I'd like to ask some of our more artistic editors to come up with a replacement, because the current image will be (and should have been) deltagged. Thanks. The Chosen One (Choose me!) 08:22, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Name change (again)

  • I'm just popping in randomly for a look around really. I don't think "Winkypedia" is the best name... With the Star Wars wiki "Wookiepedia" is obviously Star Wars as Wookiee's are fairly well know as being a major part of the Star Wars saga. And while I don't claim to be an expert on Harry Potter (I've only just got round to watching the first four films, lol) I've never heard of Winky before reading this page. So, IMO, the best name would be something that is either central to the story or is well known by even minor fans and newbies... like me! Just my thoughts. ;o) — beeurd talk 22:10, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Forum

I was wondering if we have set up a forum page on harrywiki yet? I know inheriwiki has one but I can't seem to find the one on this site. I think it could come in handy here. PhantomPrincess 13:54, 2 July 2007 (UTC) Oh and Chosen One... How did u get your talk icon to say choose me? thanks! PhantomPrincess 13:54, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

I can make them easy!!!!F
but what will happen to the portal? they seem to like the portal bettler, they may get rid of it tho.

Death hollow for deletion

One look at its contents, and it's obvious why. I already undid some vandalism by the same IP address.

Oops, I forgot to sign my name. I said, "One look at its contents...by the same IP address."--DarshaAssant 07:17, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Deleted -- Manticore Gryffindor Talk | Contribs 18:23, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Things that need to be deleted should be tagged with {{delete}} and an optional reason using {{delete|reason}}. John Reaves (talk) 21:29, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

unfixable vandalism

The "spoiler warning" on the main page currently contains a spoiler within the text, and the main page is protected, so how is it supposed to be fixed? I was going to make a note about it in the discussion page, but that's also protected, so I took it here. - UglinessMan 00:10, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

I fixed it. You should be able to edit those pages as they are only semi-protected (unless your account is less than 4 days old). John Reaves (talk) 00:17, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
My account is less than 2 days old... I created it to help clean up vandalism in the days leading up to the book's release, but I understand the need for limits. - UglinessMan 00:23, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
You know what? Screw this. I'm involved in a completely circular "is not is too" nonsense argument with a nutter on the discussion page for book seven, and because my account is so new I can't even respond to the prat. I hope I'm not the only one who cares about logic and facts as opposed to conflicting unconfirmed "leaks", because I have reached my limit, someone else can keep an eye on this crap. I might return after Saturday. - UglinessMan 02:15, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, I'll unprotect the I you like. In two days, I'll give you rollback rights too so you can revert vandalism easily. John Reaves (talk) 02:39, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Unprotecting it won't solve anything, it will probably just make it worse. My source of frustration is a small subset of individuals who insist that the alleged leaked copies are totally legit, with absolutely no verification, and there's probably nothing that can be done about that. - UglinessMan 04:10, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

The new book

Is there a collaboration of the week on this wiki yet? I thought it would be good to have the plot for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as this week's collaboration so people are encouraged to start writing about it as they're reading it. Does anyone have the book yet? Angela (talk) 23:20, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

An excellent idea since this book will be a craze for the next few weeks and if there isn't any collaboration of the fortnight, it should be made.--Cometstyles 23:46, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Just FYI, sorry if this is the wrong place to put this but the list of character deaths in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows needs to be fixed. Someone is listed as dead who is not -- I shouldn't say here as it's a spoiler but anyone who has finished the book should know who it is.--JK

All kinds of improvements

I'm an administrator at Halopedia, and I'm obsessed with standardization, categorization, etc. Anyway, since it hasn't been done yet, if it's okay (I'd hate for you guys to have to rollback so many edits if you don't want this), I want to make an infobox for spells, and put it on every page about a spell. Also, I think every spell should also be categorized as either a Charm (wingardium leviosa, folding your socks, etc.), jinxes (little tricks and pranks, like hanging someone upside down), hexes (bat bogey hex, things that when combined the right way will turn you into a giant slug), and curses (killing people, sectumsempra). I also have a bot that I could use on here to, for example, make spelling Britishized, fix other things here and there, etc... anyway, since the ways I want to contribute here involve doing all kinds of things and would cause nearly irreparable damage if you didn't like them, so I just wanna confirm that you guys are fine with some of the things I want to do. =D --NOTASTAFF GPT(talk)(eating) 03:39, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
