A harp is a stringed musical instrument with the plane of its strings positioned perpendicular to the soundboard.[3] Harps could be enchanted to be played without assistance.[4][2]

History[]

1890–1891 school year[]

There was a harp on display in the shop Flutes and Lutes in Hogsmeade.[5]

1989–1990 school year[]

Professor Sybill Trelawney would often have her Divination students observe harps and other items in class in order for them to develop their senses.[6]

1991–1992[]

During the 1991–1992 school year at Hogwarts, a harp was used by Quirinus Quirrell to prevent the three-headed dog Fluffy from waking up while Quirrell attempted to steal the Philosopher's Stone for Lord Voldemort.[1]

1993[]

During their performance at the 1993 Welcoming Feast in the Great Hall, the Hogwarts choir were accompanied by a harp.[7]

1996–1997[]

A harp was stored in the Room of Requirement during the 1996–1997 school year.[8]

The Calamity[]

During the Calamity, which affected the wizarding world in the 2010s, Self-Playing Harps owned by Madam Malkin and Minerva McGonagall manifested as Foundables, which had to be returned to their owners by members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force.[2]
