Hagrid is the surname of a wizarding family. Mr. Hagrid married the Giantess Fridwulfa, and she bore him a half-giant son named Rubeus Hagrid.[1] It is unknown if Rubeus Hagrid ever had children, for he might have been married to Olympe Maxime.

According to J. K. Rowling, the name Hagrid comes from the Old English word "hagridden", meaning to have a nightmarish night[2], particularly when hung over.
