Hagrid is the surname of a wizarding family that was originally pure-blood. However, Mr. Hagrid married a the Giantess Fridwulfa, and she bore him a half-giant son named Rubeus Hagrid.[1] It is unknown if Rubeus Hagrid ever had children, but it is known that he did not marry.

According to J.K. Rowling, the name Hagrid comes from the Old English word "hagridden", meaning to have a nightmarish night[2], particularly when hung over.
