A Gytrash is a spectral dog that only comes out at night. This very fast and dangerous spectre has a long forked tail. The grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are one of the locations in which Gytrashes are found. The Gytrash is sensitive to light and a simple Lumos spell can be used to ward off a Gytrash. The Gytrash is a creature in English folklore, and is described as a black dog, that also sometimes took the form of a spectral mule.

The Green ghost dogs in the Voldemort Duel in the PS2/XBOX/GC version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (video game), are belived to be a breed of Gytrash.
