The staircase was located in Gryffindor Tower which was accessible from the seventh floor of Hogwarts Castle. It led to the girls' dormitories.

During the 1994–1995 school year, the staircase turned on Gryffindor boys, Ron Weasley and Harry Potter. They had been trying to contact Hermione Granger, a close companion by going to her dormitory. The stairs turned into the magnificent slide and Ron fell. Hermione herself came down moments later after a pair of laughing girls.
