The staircase was located in Gryffindor Tower which was accessible from the seventh floor of Hogwarts Castle. It led to the girls' dormitories.

History

Back in the era of the Hogwarts founders, which was the time when Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin owned the school, a common belief was that girls were more trustworthy than boys. This made Gryffindor enchant the girls' staircase so that it would turn into a slide should a boy try to enter. Nothing of this type occurs with the boys' dormitory.

During the 1994–1995 school year, the staircase turned on Gryffindor boys, Ron Weasley and Harry Potter. They had been trying to contact Hermione Granger, a close companion by going to her dormitory. The stairs turned into the magnificent slide and Ron fell. Hermione herself came down moments later after a pair of laughing girls.

Behind the scenes

  • The enchantment on the girls' staircase is probably an extension of the Spell Glisseo which was used by Hermione when being pursued by Death Eaters.
