A Grim is an omen of death in the shape of a large, bear-like dog. It was first mentioned in 1993 by Professor Trelawney while Ron reads Harry's future through tea leaves. According to legend, anyone who encounters a Grim dies a short while after.
Hermione Granger highly doubted the Grim's status as an omen of death, thinking that if Grim even existed, it was a cause of death rather than an omen, as people who ever saw it would die of fear; she took Ron's claim that his Uncle Bilius died twenty-four hours after seeing a Grim as proof.
[edit] Behind the scenes
- In 1993, Sirius Black is mistaken for The Grim by Harry, as Sirius is an unregistered Animagus. He assumes the form of a dog resembling the description of a Grim. This could be seen as forshadowing of his death in 1996.
- A picture of a dog resembling the Grim appears on the cover of the book Death Omens: What to Do When You Know the Worst is Coming.
- The Grim appears to be based on the Black Shuck, a black dog which also forsees death.
- The Grim may also be based on the Barghest, a large black dog in English legend.
