This staircase was guarded by a large, ugly stone gargoyle. When one gave the gargoyle the correct password, it moved aside to reveal "a spiral staircase that was moving smoothly upward, like an escalator" that led to the Headmaster's office.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- The entrance to this staircase has changed locations quite often:
- In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, it was located off the Second Floor Corridor.
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, it was located in one of the halls around the Middle Courtyard.
- The griffin appears to move upwards along with the stairs.
- In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (video game) it appears on the Third-floor corridor, next to Classroom 3C in the PC version.
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, it was located atop the Grand Staircase Tower (assumed because the griffin and the stairwells location isn't seen).
- In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, it was located off the Seventh-floor corridor.
- In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (video game), it was located in one of the halls around the Viaduct Courtyard.
- In LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7, it is located directly on the Grand Staircase on the sixth floor.
- Despite the change of location, the Headmaster's Tower always seems to be located on the top of the Grand Staircase Tower. This may be some yet not understood magic.
