The Great Hall floating candles[1] are sticks of wax floating and covering the entire ceiling of the Great Hall to give the Hogwarts students light while they're eating during a feast, breakfast, lunch or dinner.

History

The candles serve as light while the students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are eating food. They also serves as a protection from rain or snow.

Being put out

In 1997 after the death of Albus Dumbledore, Bellatrix Lestrange was walking on a House table and kicking all the food, forks, knives and cups away. In the end Bellatrix used a spell to smash all the windows and put out the light out in the Great Hall.

Behind the scenes

  • The candles used for the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone were originally real candles suspended from tungsten wires that would be edited out in post-production. However, during the first days of filming, the candles burned through their wires and fell onto the tables. For the safety of the actors, the filmmakers switched to a digital effect instead.[1]
  • In the first two films, the candles are all the same size, however in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and subsequent films there are candles of various shapes and sizes.
