These floating candles are sticks of wax floating and covering the entire ceiling of the Great Hall to give the Hogwarts students light while their eating during a feast, breakfast, lunch or dinner.
History
The candles serves as light while the students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are eating food. They also serves as a protection from rain or snow.
Being put out
In 1997 after the death of Albus Dumbledore, Bellatrix Lestrange was walking on a House table and kicking all the food, forks, knives and cups away. In the end Bellatrix used a spell to smash all the windows and put out the light out in the Great Hall.
