"If you're interested in plants, then you're better off with Goshawk's Guide To Herbology. Did you know there's a wizard in Nepal who's growing gravity-resistant trees?"
— Neville attempting to help Harry[src]

Goshawk's Guide to Herbology was a book written by a member of the wizarding Goshawk family and covered Herbology, listing several plants, their uses and notable individuals in the field, like a wizard who grew gravity-resistant trees in Nepal in the 1990s.[1]

History[]

This book was mentioned by Neville Longbottom to Harry Potter while he was in the Hogwarts Library, searching for the tools that could be used in the second task of the 1994 Triwizard Tournament. Harry replied that he didn't really care about Herbology, unless Neville knew of a Tibetan Turnip that could help him breathe underwater.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • While the name "Goshawk" might suggest that this book was written by Miranda Goshawk, the witch who authored the The Standard Book of Spells series, the sheer number of magical sisters she had, not to mention any children they might have had, leaves the possibility that a relative of hers wrote said book. Despite this, Miranda is most likely this book's author, given how she is the only identified author in her family, having written several books on magic, most notably her The Standard Book of Spells series, meaning she likely wrote this book on Herbology as well.
