Goldstein was the surname of a wizarding family. It had both magical and Muggle heritage,[1] and may have been an old, large family, as it had branches in both the United Kingdom and the United States.[2][3][4] However, it remains unknown in which country the family originated. The family may have also been Jewish, as at least one member considered himself to be a Jew.[5]

Etymology

Goldstein is a German Jewish ornamental surname meaning "gold stone," from the German words Gold, "gold," and Stein, "stone."[6] Jews in Germany adopted family names in the late 18th century and early 19th century as a result of government policy and urbanisation.[7] Some of these family names were "ornamental" in the sense that they were created by combining two words, generally colours, metals, plants, and other nature-themed things.[7]
