The Golden Snidget is a small golden bird with fully rotational wings. It used to be quite common, but the sports of Snidget-hunting and early Quidditch depleted the species considerably.

The Snidget is completely round, covered in golden feathers, and has a long, thin beak. Its eyes are a bright red, and the rotational wings allow the Snidget to move in any direction with remarkable agility and speed.

The Golden Snidget's feathers and eyes are so highly prized that it was at one time in danger of being hunted to extinction by wizards.

The most notable factor in protection of the snidgets was the introduction of golden snitches in the game of Quidditch

The Snidget's role in Quidditch was that which is now served by the Golden Snitch, although Quidditch, when the Snidget was introduced, more closely resembled Snidget-hunting in a confined area. Chief Barberus Bragge, who released the first Snidget in a game of Quidditch, offered 150 Galleons to the first player who caught it, which prompted Modesty Rabnott to Summon the bird to her and release it.

When it became apparent that the Snidget was close to extinction, Elfrida Clagg, Chief of the Wizards' Council declared it a protected species. The Snidget was classifed as XXXX not because it is dangerous, but because severe penalities apply if it is captured or injured. Snidget sancturies are found worldwide.
