"God Rest Ye, Merry Hippogriffs" was a Christmas song presumably about Hippogriffs. In the Christmas holidays of 1995, Sirius Black was so happy to have everyone at 12 Grimmauld Place, headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix for dinner that he could be heard singing it at the top of his voice.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- The song's title appears to derive from the Christmas carol "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen".
- It is not clear whether the carol is an "official" wizarding one or just an improvisation of Sirius's.
- When the Hebrew translation was released, the song was replaced with a parody of "Mi Yimalel", a traditional Chanukah song, due to readers' perceived unfamiliarity with Christmas carols compared to the rest of the world. In this version, Sirius sang "Mi yimalel Hippogriff she-ochel?" ("Who will retell the story of the eating Hippogriff?"), a parody of the song's opening line "Mi yimalel gvurot Yisrael?" ("Who will retell the historic acts of Israel?").
