A goalpost was a hoop on either end of a Quidditch pitch. There were three hoops at each end of a pitch, about thirty feet high. Chasers would shoot the Quaffle through the hoop to score 10 points for their team. The Keeper would defend the post.[1]

History[]

Quidditch basket HL

A basket goalpost

According to Quidditch Through the Ages, the early Quidditch goals were barrels, then replaced by baskets on stilts. The lack of regulation on the baskets made cheating easier (setting fire to them, putting tiny baskets for the visiting team and enormous ones for the home team), leading to the induction of fixed-size hoops in 1883.[2]

Upon first seeing these, Harry Potter compared them to Muggle bubble wands.[1]

During the Battle of Hogwarts, giants used goalposts as weapons.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

  • In an early illustration of the game of Quidditch by J. K. Rowling (later featured on Pottermore), a Quidditch goalpost appears labelled as "Quidpost", but later canon consistently refers to the objects simply as goalposts.[4]
