Gladys Gudgeon was a fan of Gilderoy Lockhart. She wrote fan letters to him every week, and continued to do so when Lockhart was admitted to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.

The name "Gladys" is from the old Welsh name Gwladus, possibly derived from gwlad "country".
