Gillywater was a wizarding beverage, that was sold in the Three Broomsticks Inn in Hogsmeade,[1] and the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley.[2]

History[]

During the 1987–1988 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Madam Rosmerta offered Jacob's sibling Gillywater when they visited the Three Broomsticks Inn.[4]

Penny Haywood's flatmate enjoyed drinking Gillywater. Not remembering that she had placed her Gillywater behind a box, she couldn't find it and angrily accused Penny of drinking it all. Penny, not remembering drinking her flatmate's Gillywater and just wanting them both to get along, met with Jacob's sibling to help figure out the situation. After discussing with Jacob's sibling, Penny eventually decided to just buy more Gillywater and apologise despite not having taken it in the first place, wanting to err on the side of kindness to resolve their relationship issues. However, they found that her flatmate's original Gillywater was behind the box all along, with her flatmate still taking the Gillywater Penny bought for her without even thanking her or apologising for accusing her, continuing to sour their relationship.[5]

In December 1993, Minerva McGonagall ordered a glass of Gillywater at the Three Broomsticks Inn whilst she was there with her fellow Professors and the then Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge.[1]

In early 1996, Luna Lovegood ordered a glass of Gillywater at the Three Broomsticks Inn which she drunk with an added slice of onion, whilst she was there with Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Rita Skeeter.[6]

In December 1996, Romilda Vane once tried to convince Harry Potter to drink some that she had spiked with Love Potion in the Gryffindor common room, to which he declined, saying that he disliked Gillywater. As he was aware that the one he was being offered was spiked with Love Potion, it was unclear if he actually disliked it, or if it was just an excuse.[7]

Ivy Warrington said she disliked Gillywater, next to Cassandra.[8][9]

Behind the scenes[]

  • It is possible that this drink contains Gillyweed as an ingredient, although this is unproven.
