The wand of Gilderoy Lockhart was nine inches, made of cherry with a dragon heartstring core, and was described as "slightly bendy".[1]

History

He most likely purchased it when he first attended Hogwarts in around 1975. Due to long term neglect of his innate talent, Lockhart was not able to cast many spells correctly, but was a master at the use of Memory Charms.[2] The wand was described as expensive.[3]

In 1992, during his first second year Defence Against the Dark Arts class at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he used his wand in a failed attempt to subdue a batch of highly troublesome Pixies with the nonsense incantation Peskipiksi Pesternomi, after he had foolishly let them loose in the classroom.[4]

Later in the year, Lockhart attempted to mend Harry Potter's broken arm bones after they had been broken by a rogue Bludger after a Quidditch match with his wand, with the healing spell Brackium Emendo; however, he performed the spell incorrectly and ended up instead vanishing them completely.[5]

Lockhart's wand - Pottermore

Lockhart's wand being thrown out of his office window

During the first and final Duelling Club meeting during the school year, Lockhart was initially disarmed of his wand by Severus Snape after underestimating his duelling abilities in a duelling demonstration. He also tried to show Harry Potter how to block spells, but instead dropped his wand after waving it around flamboyantly. He then used the charm Alarte Ascendare to propel a snake that Draco Malfoy had conjured into the air, which simply aggravated it.[6]

In 1993, Harry Potter disarmed Lockhart of his wand when the latter tried to perform the Memory Charm against him and his friend, Ron Weasley, after they confronted his plan to leave the school and his disclosure of his fraudulence. It is unknown what happened to it after Ron threw it out the open window of Lockhart's office.[2]

Behind the scenes

  • In the Harry Potter: The Wand Collection, the film prop for Gilderoy's wand is listed as being 17.5 inches long, nearly double of the 9 inches it was supposed to be.
  • Wands constructed from cherry are usually misinterpreted by Western purchasers for frivolous or merely ornamental reasons, as they make a wand of truly lethal power, regardless of core. However, a cherry wand with dragon heartstring core should never be teamed with a wizard without exceptional self-control and strength of mind.[7] Lockhart possessing such a wand may be due to his vain nature seeing the wand's physical beauty, and his magical and intellectual ineptitude from years of skill neglect has caused more damage than good via this wand's power.
  • In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, when the pixies swiped Lockhart's wand, instead of throwing it out of the window, they used it to break the chain holding the dragon's skeleton from the ceiling beams, causing it to fall.
    • Also in the film, Lockhart was forced to drop his wand onto the floor when Harry and Ron pointed theirs at him before he had a chance to point it properly at them.
