Lockhart in the midst of packing up his office

On the night of June 1993, Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley went to Lockhart's office to tell him that they had discovered that the monster which had been attacking the Muggle-born students during the year was a basilisk as they thought he was getting ready to enter the Chamber of Secrets to rescue Ginny Weasley who had been taken to the Chamber. Instead, they came to find Lockhart in the middle if hastily packing up his belongings in order to flee the school.

Lockhart's robes and other clothing where pilled into two large trunks.[2] The numerous photos and poster which Lockhart used to decorate his office and classroom where packed into the boxes and portfolios. As the two Gryffindors confronted him, Lockhart started to place items in his carrying bag which included his false hair piece.[3] Eventually, Harry and Ron learned Lockhart was a charlatan who had taken the credit for his deeds from other witches and wizards. When Lockhart was disarmed by Harry in defence against an incoming Memory Charm, he tripped over one of his trunks.
