The Giant Squid is a creature that lives in the Hogwarts Lake. Despite the generalized fear of it, the Giant Squid is actually very docile and helpful to the students of Hogwarts, such as when Dennis Creevey fell into the Lake, and he was immediately picked up by one of the squid's tentacles and put safely back in the boat. This squid is also known to play with and accept foodstuffs from students.
[edit] Behind the scenes
Black Lake of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, home of the Giant Squid
- J. K. Rowling once joked, that the Squid is Godric Gryffindor, one of the four founders of Hogwarts. This would make it the world's largest Animagus. On the eleventh hour of every evening, The Squid would rise from the lake and transform into Gryffindor, who would wander the school grounds before returning at sunrise. This cannot be considered canon, however, because Rowling was trying to make a point sarcastically.
- True giant squids (genus Architeuthis) are deep-sea-dwelling creatures, and hence would not actually be found in lakes, let alone the lochs of Scotland.
