Duplicates an object |
- "Hermione screamed in pain, and Harry turned his wand on her in time to see a jeweled goblet tumbling from her grip. But as it fell, it split, became a shower of goblets, so that a second later, with a great clatter, the floor was covered in identical cups rolling in every direction, the original impossible to discern amongst them."
- —Description of Geminio used with Flagrante[src]
Geminio is a spell that duplicates an object. The duplicate created by the spell resembles the original in appearence only, and other qualities possessed by the original do not pass onto the duplicate - for example duplicates of money and valuables are worthless, and duplicates of objects with special powers (such as a Horcrux) do not function. It is unknown what happens if Geminio is used to duplicate food, but it is likely that it works with no obvious faults (Hermione Granger mentions in 1997 that food cannot be conjured but it can be multiplied). It was used by Hermione Granger in 1997 to create a passable duplicate of Salazar Slytherin's Locket which contained one of Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes. Gringotts Wizarding Bank also employs it, in conjuction with Flagrante, as a security measure in the Lestrange Vault.
[edit] Etymology
Latin gemino meaning "to double".
[edit] Behind the scenes
- The Latin word gemini means "twins." This is appropriate, as the spell duplicates, or twins the target. Gemini is also the Greek name for the Twins, a constellation and third sign of the zodiac.
