"...during the wildcat Gargoyle Strike of 1911, the wildcats were winning when..."
— Cuthbert Binns lecturing on this strike[src]

The Gargoyle Strike of 1911 was a wildcat strike of gargoyles that occurred in 1911.[2] A "wildcat strike" referred to a stopping of work by unionised workers without authorisation from the union. As it mentioned "the wildcats were winning", likely things were moving in favour of the gargoyles when something noteworthy happened. Professor Cuthbert Binns was giving a lecture on this strike to one of his classes during the 1991–1992 school year when he was accidentally interrupted by Harry Potter.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • The line of dialogue that mentions this strike was intended to be used in the Game Boy Color version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as part of a mechanic where Harry would lose house points for interrupting classes. However, this is not possible in the final game, and thus this dialogue goes unused, though it still appears in the game's ROM.[3]
  • A History of Magic trivia question in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery asks which year a wildcat gargoyle strike took place, the correct answer being 1911, making it the event's first uncut mention.
  • Gargoyles known in canon appear to be enchanted objects. It is unknown if the form of this objects is based on real beings who would be able to go on a wildstrike, or if the enchanted objects had enough intelligence to do so.
