- "And Peeves, whom Harry had never seen take an order from a student before, swept his belled hat from his head and sprang to a salute as Fred and George wheeled about to tumultuous applause from the students below and sped out of the open front doors into the glorious sunset."
- — Fred and George departing Hogwarts[src]
Fred and George Weasley's departure from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry took place sometime after the Easter Holidays in 1996, after rebelling against Dolores Umbridge and the Inquisitorial Squad for most of the year.[1]
Background information[]
Events leading up to their departure[]
- Joining Dumbledore's Army with a number of other students.[2]
- Selling Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes products that they had perfected to Hogwarts students.[3]
- Shoving Graham Montague into the Vanishing Cabinet after he tried to dock a large amount of House points from them.[4]
- Setting off their entire stock of Weasleys' Wildfire Whiz-bangs all through Hogwarts.[4]
- Placing a Portable Swamp in the hallway near Professor Umbridge's office.[1]
Departure[]
- Umbridge: "You two are about to learn what happens to wrong-doers in my school."
- Fred: "You know what? I don't think we are. George, I think we've outgrown full-time education... Time to test our talents in the real world, d'you reckon?"
- George: "Definitely."
- — The twins departing Hogwarts[src]
The twins placed their Portable Swamp in the hallway near Professor Umbridge's office so that Harry Potter could use Umbridge's fireplace to speak to Sirius Black via Floo Network. When Harry was finished speaking to them, Filch came into Umbridge's office, happily saying that he had permission to whip wrongdoers. He did not see Harry, as Harry had his Invisibility cloak on.[1]
Fred and George Summoned their broomsticks from Umbridge's office, and flew out of Hogwarts, after advertising their shop.[1]
Aftermath[]
Along with Peeves, many other students attempted to become "Troublemakers-in-Chief". Lee Jordan had been setting Nifflers into Umbridge's office, students often dropped Dungbombs and Stink Pellets, and many students who had bought Skiving Snackboxes put use to them while in Umbridge's classes.[1]
After leaving Hogwarts, Fred and George Weasley went on to become incredibly successful businessmen, opening Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley.[5] However, Fred was tragically killed in the Battle of Hogwarts less than two years later while battling Pius Thicknesse alongside his brother, Percy Weasley.[6]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, since Harry's attempt to use Umbridge's fireplace to connect to 12 Grimmauld Place to speak to Sirius and Lupin has been omitted, Fred and George fly away from Hogwarts after having released their Whiz-bangs. The Portable Swamp is omitted also. In their escape, which took place during the O.W.L. exam for Charms, the Whiz-bangs destroyed all the Educational Decrees that were hanging on the Great Hall's walls, much to the cheers of the students.
- "The Weasley twins escaping" was one out of the thirty-two options generated by an old feature[7] on Pottermore, "Wonderful wizarding world happiness generator", which was about things that could cast away the Blue Monday blues.[8]
