Forums: Index > The Wizengamot > Top right icon

So I was thinking, maybe we should have top right icons (technically top left icons) for this wiki. If you do not know what they are, they are small 30x30 pixel boxes on the top left of your screen above the article's content that show appearances in games. For examples, see the Call of Duty Wiki. We already use this to a small amount. What I mean is the image of the Golden Snitch that is on articles that have been previously featured. Except it will be on the left side of the page, just below the article's title. We could get rid of "Appearances" sections, and make article seem cleaner and more organized. If so, the template's coding could be "{{topright|...}}". If we do this, I could get the coding for it, and someone will have to get small images for the icons themselves, and finally, an administrator should protect the page, seeing as it would be seen on every article on the wiki.

Ideas for Icons

  • I think that icons for things that appeared in the books would have black boxes, with the abbreviations of the books in white lettering. if it appeared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, it'd have a black box saying "COS" in the middle.
  • I think that icons for things that appeared in the films would have black boxes, with abbreviations of the books in the centre in white lettering, but saying "film" in the corner in small print. The same would go for video games, except it would say "game" rather than "film".
  • For article on cut content, we would have a image of a pair of scissors.

If possible, I would like to get started on this as soon as possible! Discuss it below in the comments! Mace1700 23:31, December 11, 2011 (UTC)

  • I've seen these on other wikis (Wookieepedia comes to mind) and I have to say I generally do not like them and personally perceive them as "ugly", and would rather not see them implemented here. However, if other users like the idea, I'm certainly not going to stand in the way. I do have to say, however, that the appearances section would still have to stay regardless, as it gives info other than which books (films, games, w/e) the subject appeared in, such as the nature of that appearance (Did it directly appear? Was it just mentioned? Was that apperance canon? etc.) which simply cannot be expressed well via these icons. -- 1337star (Owl Post) 23:39, December 11, 2011 (UTC)
    • You're right. The appearance section should stay. However, I personally think that they're a good idea. Mace1700 23:41, December 11, 2011 (UTC)
      • Actually I like how the wiki is, anyways, we aren't "Call of Duty" Wiki. I typically think the "Appearances" sections are fine, if we were going to do this, this will take quite a while since we have over 9,000 pages.  Speedysnitch   Talk  contribs  23:43, December 11, 2011 (UTC)
        • I'm not an edit-whore, but isn't that alll-the-more edits we can make?Mace1700 23:47, December 11, 2011 (UTC)
          • This proposal actually dates back to when Cavalier One brought it up during a discussion to change the canon policy, oh a few years ago. I expressed my disapproval then, and I keep my opinion til today. Titleicons are not that aesthetically pleasing, in my humble opinion, and do not offer the same type of info (nor as clearly as) our current "Appearances" section does (not to mention the massive undertaking it would be to do the necessary changes to all our almost 10000 articles). --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 00:00, December 12, 2011 (UTC)
            • The reason for my proposal was based upon indicating the canon/format from which the article is derived, not the individual work in which the article is featured. The Appearances section works fine for that. Having the icons beneath the article name is messy in my opinion, and icons like these only work if they are unobtrusive and small in number. On Wookieepedia, for instance, the icons are used to designate the specific era in which the article appears, not the work. On the Harry Potter article for instance, the icons would number around 30 (10 books, 8 films, 11 games, various other media, etc) which would not work aesthetically in my opinion. - Cavalier OneGryffindorcrest(Wizarding Wireless Network) 09:49, December 12, 2011 (UTC)
                • In my opinion, titleicons should only be implemented if there is an actuall need for them. I honestly don't think there is one here. Jayden Matthews 14:03, December 12, 2011 (UTC)
