Recently, articles were created on two South Korean voice actors (Eom Sang Hyeon and Jeong Mi Sook), with the subjects' family names preceding their given names in the titles, as is traditional in both South Korea and North Korea, as well as other East Asian cultures including China and Japan.

This got me to thinking that the "Naming of articles" section of HPW:POLICY currently doesn't include a clause specifying how to handle the titling of articles about subjects from cultures where family name typically precedes given name.

With in-universe subjects, it strikes me as logical to retain the ordering used in canon (i.e., Keiko Takahashi, not Takahashi Keiko), but with real-world subjects, there's more than one titling convention that could be adopted:

  1. Western ordering (given name, family name) applied universally. Hence the South Korean voice actor articles would be moved to Sang-hyeon Eom and Mi-sook Jeong.
  2. Family-name-first ordering for Korean subjects, but Western ordering for Japanese subjects, as is done on Wikipedia (compare Hayao Miyazaki to Kim Hyo-yeon). The exception, of course, would be subjects of Korean descent living in Western countries, who use Western name ordering.

I'd prefer number 2. I read the general wikipedia policy on the subject, and I think we should follow it. Family name first for all East Asian countries except Japan. SorenaJ (talk) 07:19, August 14, 2012 (UTC)
