Forums: Index > The Wizengamot > Redirects on file moves

Hi. This is more of a piece of advice than a discussion, but I'm putting it here in a referenceable location.

When moving files, can we please not leave the redirects behind? File redirects are a nuisance to deal with and simply clutter up the wiki in pointless redirects that don't really help anyone. When moving files, the redirects should be suppressed and all references to the old filename changed to the new name.

If you don't want to do this manually, it can be done automatically using this script: w:c:dev:FileUsageAuto-update. The script updates the file name automatically across all the pages it is used (but not just general links in this format) without needing to leave a redirect behind.

I will eventually clean up all of the redirects in the file and template namespaces, but for now, I'm focusing on files and would urge users to avoid leaving behind the file redirects simply to avoid updating the file on the pages where it's used. Thanks. --Sajuuk 15:07, May 30, 2016 (UTC)
