I'm trying to sort out why the Appearances for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard are piped to not display the (real) text. If Appearances are always Out of Universe items, why obscure this fact for these lists? Similarly related, when using these items for References, it seems the (real) version should always be used, yes? Or should these be piped as well to remove (real) and if so why? Thanks --Ironyak1 (talk) 17:23, May 19, 2016 (UTC)

Most likely because some previous editors who don't edit the wiki anymore felt it was better to pipe links for no real purpose to confuse others. Doesn't need a topic, just fix the mistakes and move on. ;) --Sajuuk 17:31, May 19, 2016 (UTC)
Unfortunately from a "fixing" perspective it is a wide spread "issue" / format choice as it is part of the Layout Guide so probably best to get the reasoning why before making all the changes. --Ironyak1 (talk) 17:58, May 19, 2016 (UTC)
Bump - anyone have historical insight or explanation? If not, I will add this unpiping to the list of general fixes to be made when editing a page. Thanks --Ironyak1 (talk) 04:39, May 27, 2016 (UTC)
Because "(real)" is a disambiguation that is unnecessary when one speaks in a out-of-universe list of appearances (unlike "film", or "video game"). As such, the piped links in those instances are to be kept. --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 14:59, May 27, 2016 (UTC)
Personally, I'd prefer explicit links to the (real) version over the "masking" (as you have to hover to see if the link was correctly made to (real) or not). However, I better understand the intent and will happily take this off my list of changes. Thanks for the explanation!
References should always be unpiped (real) though correct? --Ironyak1 (talk) 15:53, May 27, 2016 (UTC)
References are similarly out-of-universe by definition, so the "(real)" bit would be unnecessary there as well, and for the same reason (unless the lack of disambiguation would make something sound awkward-sounding, somehow; like a note saying "Quidditch Through the Ages (real) tells us that Quidditch Through the Ages was published by Whizz Hard Books" or something to that effect, though there are several ways to improve on that wording.) --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 16:06, May 27, 2016 (UTC)
Fair enough, although all the implicit referencing to (real) makes it far more difficult to confirm that these links are correctly established when reviewing an article... I think I'll add an 'Appearance' option to the QTA, FB, and TBB link templates to simplify the creation and maintenance of this "... (real)|..." piping format as they are the predominate use case.
