:My preference would be #3 for the books and #2 for the films. A chapter-by-chapter plot breakdown works well for the books, but not quite so well for the films. For greater consistency, it might be better to go with the solid block plot synopsis, but use one paragraph per chapter so it's still somewhat broken-down that way. - <font face="Monotype Corsiva" size="4" color="FF8000">Nick O'Demus</font> 17:59, February 23, 2010 (UTC)

I agree with Nick, but I would only want chapters in the difference section, to see the differences from each chapter.--<span style="color:black">L.V.K.T.V.J.</span>(<span style="color:red">Send an owl!</span>) 13:24, February 24, 2010 (UTC)

Forums: Index > The Wizengamot > Policy Guidelines for Formatting OOU Articles

There are massive inconsistencies in the way OOU articles specifically those regarding the Books and Movies are written. The plot is formatted in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone differently from the way it is done in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and still differently from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Overall I propose for general formatting for the pages on the books:

 1. The page should be topped by a general blurb per usual, then a list of chapters, followed by a plot synopsis, an errors section, a behind the scenes, and finally sections detailing other things (deaths, editions, mistakes, etc.).
 2. Intro blurb, followed by a brief description (back cover), plot synopsis, errors, behind the scenes, and then the miscellaneous information (deaths, editions, mistakes, etc.)
 3. Combination of the first two: Intro Blurb, Back Cover Description, Chapter List, Plot Synopsis, Errors, Behind the Scenes, and Finally a miscellaneous section (deaths, you get the picture).
Also, the way the plot synopsis needs to organized:
 1. A Chapter by Chapter breakdown giving details for each chapter.
 2. A solid block of plot synopsis.

For the movies:

 1. Intro Blurb, Plot Synopsis, Cast Information, Omissions/Mistakes, Differences from the Book, Box Office, Behind the Scenes.
 2. Intro Blurb, Scene List, Plot Synopsis, Cast Info, Omissions/Mistakes, Differences from the Book, Box Office, Behind the Scenes.
Any Differences from the Book Section, Plot Synopsis:
 1. Chapter by Chapter.
 2. Solid Blocks.
 3. Chapter by Chapter for only the Synopsis or Differences Section.

Let me know what you guys think. --Hcoknhoj 09:00, January 27, 2010 (UTC)

I like the idea, this will give us more information from everything. --Station7 13:38, January 27, 2010 (UTC)
There's already a Layout guide for in-universe articles, so it makes sense to have one for out-of-universe too. You're right that there's too much inconsistency as is. - Nick O'Demus 13:46, January 27, 2010 (UTC)
For the movies articles, i planned since december last year to input the Chapter by Chapter differences from the book in HP1-HP5 like what i did in the Half-Blood Prince (film) article, but i haven't started yet because it takes more time and lot of works to do that. All in all, i like the proposal on this forum. --ÈnŔîčö DCRavenclawcrest(Send me an Owl!) 18:43, January 27, 2010 (UTC)
For the books, I think number 2 is preferable, with a chapter-by-chapter breakdown. For the films, number 2 with chapter-by-chapter for the Synopsis and Differences Section. --  Seth Cooper  owl post! 00:24, January 28, 2010 (UTC)
After looking at my proposals, I'd go with the number 2s, but with solid blocks for the plot, but I'm not against using the chapter by chapter. It will be a big job to basically rewrite the plot synopses to meet the new chapter by chapter guidelines though. --Hcoknhoj 15:07, January 28, 2010 (UTC)
A similar proposal was put forward by Quidditch Lover back in October. My recommendation then was that we should base the organization of our book articles on that used on Wikipedia: "Synopsis" (description of plot), "Background" (information on JRK's writing process), "Release" (leaks, marketing, midnight parties), and "Reception" (critical reviews, sales, awards). We could break "Synopsis" into sub-sections, but when it comes to the possibility of doing a chapter-by-chapter breakdown, I do worry this would make articles too long. Starstuff (Owl me!) 23:59, January 29, 2010 (UTC)
Isn't accuracy more important than length? I'd rather have to sit for a hour to read an article and get it right, than have omissions and inaccuracies. --Hcoknhoj 00:01, January 30, 2010 (UTC)
Ok, now that our other vote is over, I'd like to continue discussion here. The problem with the wikipedia guidelines is that it doesn't allow for ommissions, differences, etc. --JKochRavenclawcrest(Owl Me!) 17:40, February 23, 2010 (UTC)
