I am wondering if the phoenix wand was able to act on its own accord to defend Harry at the beginning of Book 7, why did it not defend him in Book 5 when Voldermont cast the killing curse on him and dumbledore was the one to save him. According to the explanation in Book7, the wand was imbue with its power at the end of book 4. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Yai 1975 (talkcontribs).

One possible explanation would be, in the seven potter chase, Harry was fully aware of Voldermont's attack. He was feeling life threat against him. While in book 5 it was so quick that even before he realized what would happened the curse was fired. Remusblack 17:01, December 11, 2009 (UTC)

Another possibility is psychology. It's known that a person's mental state can affect their magical abilities, such as changing the form of a Patronus, or when Tonks' metamorphic abilites decreased in HBP. Harry had just seen his godfather, the closest thing he had left to family, die right in front him. His own will to live at that moment probably wasn't exactly at an all-time high. - Nick O'Demus 17:38, December 11, 2009 (UTC)
