I noticed that there are a few images of book covers from different countries in Category:Covers, such as this and this, but most of them are not used on any page in the wiki. Is there any particular reason they're not on the pages for the respective books and/or Cover art? I added the French cover to the gallery on Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which already had all the US and UK covers and the Dutch one.

This page has covers for all 7 books in 6 European languages. Would it be OK if I uploaded those images and added them to the respective book pages, using the same format I did on the Philosopher's Stone page for the French and Dutch ones? Or would it violate the image use policy, since that's not an official source? If that source isn't OK, would it be OK if I found the images on the international publishers' websites? (That would be more difficult, but probably not impossible.) I think a gallery of translation covers would be a good addition to the cover art page, but I don't want to step on anyone's toes or go against a previous decision. —Josiah Rowe 16:08, November 23, 2010 (UTC)

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?Josiah Rowe 06:53, November 25, 2010 (UTC)
The website seems legitimate (at least I recognize the American and British covers as official), although verifying the images on the publisher's websites would be best (especially as some of the pictures seem rather poorly cropped). But sure, a gallery of covers from the various internationsl editions would be fine for the books' articles. - Nick O'Demus 08:32, November 25, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for repying, Nick. I'll take a look and see what I can find at the various publishers' websites.
By the way: would it be possible to move the French cover images to new file names? As it is, they're very strangely named: for example, Chamber of Secrets is at File:French Book Cover4.jpg, Prisoner of Azkaban is at File:French Book Cover1.jpg, and Goblet of Fire is at File:French Book Cover3.jpg. That naming scheme doesn't make any sense, but it would probably be easier if the images were moved before they were added to the relevant pages. (Also, there are two copies of the French Philosopher's Stone cover, one at File:French Book Cover11.jpg and the other at File:French cover Philosopher's.jpg; one of those should probably be deleted.) —Josiah Rowe 08:42, November 25, 2010 (UTC)
I moved the File:French Book CoverX pics, but there seem to be some differences in those two Philosopher's Stone covers, besides just the text and file size (for example, look at Hermione's hair, Hedwig's cage, and the castle in the background). - Nick O'Demus 09:45, November 25, 2010 (UTC)
Oh, so they are. Well spotted. It would be interesting to find out the difference between the two, but that would probably take more French fluency than I possess. (I've got about as much French as Grawp has English.) Do you think it's worth putting both versions in the cover gallery?
I'd say we'd need to know the purpose of the difference first (like the U.K.'s children's cover and adult cover) You might ask one of our French users if they know why. - Nick O'Demus 20:30, November 27, 2010 (UTC)
Do you think it's worth including both in the cover gallery? Similarly, do you think that the cover gallery should include international editions like File:Хари Потер и Каменот на Мудроста.jpg, which just reuse the cover images from the UK or US editions? —Josiah Rowe 19:17, November 26, 2010 (UTC)
Hmmm, tricky. I'd say, if it's already been uploaded, and we know the source (this one says it's Macedonian), go ahead and add it. - Nick O'Demus 20:30, November 27, 2010 (UTC)
Will do. I just found this extensive gallery at The-Leaky-Cauldron.org. It would save a lot of time if I could use the images from there, instead of searching through publishers' websites in every language under the sun... but I'll keep doing that for now, unless you tell me that using the Leaky Cauldron gallery as a source is OK. —Josiah Rowe 04:58, November 29, 2010 (UTC)
An afterthought about the Leaky Cauldron's galleries: one advantage would be that some of the images are occasionally larger and higher-quality than the ones available on publishers' websites (for example, compare the postage-stamp-sized covers on the Finnish publisher's website with this and this from the Leaky gallery); a disadvantage would be that the larger Leaky images all seem to be watermarked with their website's address. Swings and roundabouts, I suppose. —Josiah Rowe 05:15, November 29, 2010 (UTC)
Ah! Better than either, at least in this particular case: the Finnish Wikipedia! Lovely image size, no watermark. Only question is whether it's OK by the image policy (which, as I read it, seems to be aimed more at ensuring that Photoshopped images from the movies and so forth don't get uploaded — am I right?). —Josiah Rowe 05:23, November 29, 2010 (UTC)

Hi Nick, Hi Josiah, I'm one of the french users (and I speak a bad english, sorry), for my part I don't know the differences from French_Book_Cover11.jpg and File:French_cover_Philosopher's.jpg and none of my books are exactly like these (they probably are more recent because I bought one in 2000). The first drawing seems more usual, but with the classic fonts. --   Famini    talk    contribs   09:39, November 29, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for checking, though! I'll ask the other French users and see if any of them know. —Josiah Rowe 23:51, November 29, 2010 (UTC)
Hi everyone ! As I said, Jean-Claude Götting, the french illustrator, first illustrated Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone like this for the paperback edited in 1998 (only front cover). In 2007, he painted 3 new covers for HP1, HP2 & HP3 (including front cover & back cover). These covers were used by Folio in order to edit the books with a new design ! If you have some basics in french, you can read more here ! -Kevin51340 00:42, November 30, 2010 (UTC)
Merci! —Josiah Rowe 02:10, November 30, 2010 (UTC)

OK, I've uploaded images of the full art for all the French covers, and placed them in a gallery at Cover art#French covers. Do you think we need to have all three French versions in the galleries for each book as well? If we decide to use only one French edition, which one is best: the original, the revised front cover, or the full art sans text? —Josiah Rowe 09:52, December 1, 2010 (UTC)

Hey pals, sorry i'm late in this discussion. The editor of the French Harry Potter books, Gallimard, first published a medium size book with this cover. Then, a few years later, a paperback version was released (second cover). Same for all HP books. Jordan Girardin 17:39, December 1, 2010 (UTC)
Now I'm confused. Was this the original cover, or was this? —Josiah Rowe 18:48, December 1, 2010 (UTC)

This one is not the original !
