A flesh fly was a fly belonging to the family Sarcophagidae.[1] These flies were distinct from the majority of flies in that they were ovivoparous, laying live maggots instead of eggs on dead animals, decaying matter, and dung.[1] They were also known to lay maggots in the open wounds of mammals (which was how they got their name).[1]
Flesh flies were used to distract a spider and provoke it into smashing through hedges in the Hedge Maze of the Triwizard Tournament.[2]
