First Year
From Harry Potter Wiki
First year students wait to be Sorted.
A First Year is a first year student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. First Years are typically 11 or 12 years of age, and begin the year by crossing the Lake by boat under the direction of the Gamekeeper. At the Welcoming Feast, there is the Sorting ceremony; the students are Sorted into the four houses (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin) by the Sorting Hat. There are usually 10 first years per house (five girls, five boys), leaving a total of 40 students per year. First year classes include Flying Lessons, Potions, Herbology, D.A.D.A., Transfiguration, History of Magic, Astronomy, and Charms. First years cannot go to the Hogsmeade weekend trips. They also can't fly with their own broomsticks at Hogwarts.
