This unidentified spell was a Transforming spell that transfigured a fiery rope into a snake.

History of use

Voldemort first used this spell against Dumbledore, who tried to entrap him with a ring of fire, during the duel in the Ministry Atrium . Severus Snape later used it in self-defence to transfigure Minerva McGonagall's fiery lasso into a serpent.

Behind the scenes

  • This spell is probably related to the Snake Summons Spell.
  • Interestingly, the only times this spell was known to have been used were both in the self-defence of powerful dark wizards, against the charm Fire rope cast by professors of Transfiguration who later went on to become heads of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (which is coincidentally ironic in both cases too, since the efforts of transfiguration professors would have therefore been thwarted by magic they specialise in).
  • It is likely that this spell works against any column of fire, so it would probably work against spells like Stream of Flames and maybe even Firestorm too.
  • Interestingly, this is the only fire-based magic that is not also a charm.
  • It is shown in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, that it works on Fiendfyre. But in the film Voldemort used the two spells at the same time.
  • This spell could change fire fully snakes
