Fire rope is a charm that creates a fiery rope that can bind a foe. The flame can flow from the wand tip or an external source (e.g. a torch).

History of use

• Albus Dumbledore used this charm to try and ensnare Lord Voldemort during their Duel in the Ministry Atrium.
• Minerva McGonagall used this spell in 1998 during the Ousting of Severus Snape in an attempt to bind him.

Behind the scenes

• This spell was only used in the books, replaced both times in the film series. In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Dumbledore used a non-verbal water spell instead (either Aguamenti or Aqua Eructo, however, the latter is most likely) whereas in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it was replaced by another fire-quality spell.
• This spell has only ever been used by professors of Transfiguration who later went on to become heads of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry against Dark wizards (which is somewhat ironic, because the spell is a charm not a transfiguration).
• Both times this spell was used it was nullified by fire to snake.
