Fire-omens were a concept in Divination. They were presumably signs seen in flames. At the start of 1993-1994 school year, Professor Sybill Trelawney promised her third year students that they would begin to study crystal-gazing in the summer term, as long as they were done learning about fire-omens by that time.

Behind the scenes

• Firenze taught his fifth-year Divination class to burn various herbs and spices such as sage, and to try and see symbols in the smoke. It is unknown if this would be considered a form of reading fire-omens.
