Mr Milvus Grizedale, Kitemaker was a shop in Diagon Alley speacialising in kites and presumably owned by one Mr Milvus Grizedale. The words "Per volar sù nata" was written underneath the two windows of the establishment.[1]

It shared the same building with Bernie Balls Fireworks. On its right were Bats! Bats! Bats! and Nollikins for Scrolls & Skins, left were What Larks! Songbird Specialists and Crispa Culpepper's Drugs & Preparations.[2]

Etymology[]

Milvus milvus is the binomial name of the bird red kite.[3]

Grizedale Forest is an area near Lancashire, England.[4]

Behind the scenes[]

  • A kite, other than referring to a traditional toy flown for recreation, art or other practical uses,[5] is also a common name for certain birds of prey in the family Accipitridae.[6]
    • The red kite is Illustrator Jim Kay's favourite kind of bird. Kay could hear the bird's squealing as he worked on illustrating Diagon Alley, thus the idea of a kite shop was born.[7]
    • In June 2010, a three-year project with red kites in Grizedale Forest was announced. The project aimed for establishing a viable population of red kites in Grizedale by 2015, increasing the chances of a continuous geographical range by linking up with existing populations in Wales, Yorkshire, North East England and South West Scotland, and developing community involvement and creating educational opportunities arising from the project.[3]
  • Per volar sù nata is an Italian phrase notably featured in Purgatorio, the second part of Dante's Divine Comedy,[8] meaning "born to soar".[9]

The idea of a kite shop came to me while I was working on Diagon Alley, and the familiar squealing of a kite could be heard outside. There was a huge kite reintroduction scheme started in Grizedale, (an area of the Lake District in the UK) and so it made sense to me to have the kite shop called ‘Milvus Grizedale, Kite Maker’."
