This spell (incantation unknown) could be used to conjure large blasts of fire from the wand as an offensive attack against an opponent in duelling.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Minerva McGonagall uses this spell to fend off Severus Snape and the Carrows. While doing so, the flames hit Amycus and Alecto Carrow, knocking them out. In the novel, the duel between McGonagall and Snape plays out somewhat differently; she did use fire at one point in their duel, though it was through using the fire from burning torches along the walls, not through conjuring flames from her wand.[2]
- In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, during the duel between McGonagall and Snape, the fire from the Great Hall's torches diminishes.[1] It could be that McGonagall did use the same spell as she did in the novel, with the flames relocating from the torches to then reappear at the tip of her wand, rather than simply moving through the air. However, it could also be that the torches diminishing was a director's choice for creating a darker and more tense atmosphere for the duel.
- This spell looks remarkably similar to the Blasting Curses that Hermione Granger and Harry Potter used against Nagini in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Part 2. However, it is doubtful that they are the same spell, as Confringo is used to blast an object, causing fire to erupt from it as a result, while this spell is used to create and direct a source of fire.
- It is possible that this spell in the film is simply the Fire-Making Spell, or one of its variants, like the Incendio Duo Spell or Incendio Tria.
