A torch was a portable light source which could be used as decorations.[1] There were several fire torches around Hogwarts Castle, including dragon braziers and Hufflepuff Silver Gargoyles.[2][3][4]
History[]
In the 1991–1992 school year, when Mrs Norris noticed the Trio (Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ronald Weasley) accidentally entering the forbidden third-floor corridor, a fire torch was magically lit with fire.[5]
Later in 1992, during the skirmish in the Underground Chambers, Quirinus Quirrell was commanded by Lord Voldemort to light the torches in the final chamber.[6]
In the 1992–1993 school year, Harry Potter was gifted a harmonica by a male Muggle Studies teacher's student assistant in exchange for giving him a battery-powered torch.[7]
On 1 May 1998, during a duel between Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape (who was, at that time, the Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry), McGonagall brandished her wand to a fire torch on the wall, making it fly off its bracket toward Snape. Snape, however, turned the flame into a large black snake.[8]
