This practical Defence Against the Dark Arts textbook was released sometime in or prior to September of 1995. Its cover depicted a silver shield deflecting a green spell, similar to the Killing Curse.[1]
History[]
A number of fifth year students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry owned copies of this book, but Dolores Umbridge disallowed its use in her classes, instead using texts such as Defensive Magical Theory and Dark Arts Defence: Basics for Beginners that only covered the subject from a theoretical standpoint. Harry Potter supplied copies of this book to the members of Dumbledore's Army; however, they were Transfigured into books more suitable in her eyes by Umbridge when they were caught with the textbooks.[1]
At the Start-of-Term Feast in 1996, Albus Dumbledore gave Severus Snape a copy of this book, as he had been appointed Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- The cover illustration may be a reference to Voldemort's silver shield spell deflecting Albus Dumbledore's forceful spell in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but as that forceful spell was invisible, it might have been the Killing Curse instead.[2]
- The existence of this book, which only appears in LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7, is to represent the Defence Against the Dark Arts class in general, as this cannot be done via dialogue, which is non-existent in the early LEGO video games.
