A notice posted in Honeydukes warning about food allergies

An allergy is something that triggers an allergic reaction in the body.[1]

Human beings could be allergic to a variety of foods, including various types of nuts, wheat, milk, eggs, and/or soy.[2]

History[]

In 1959, Minister for Magic Wilhelmina Tuft died in office after discovering her allergy to Alihotsy-flavoured fudge.[3]

Rubeus Hagrid was allergic to cats,[4] and they made him sneeze.[5] He informed Harry Potter of this allergy on 31 July 1991 in Diagon Alley, whilst discussing a suitable animal to buy for him as a Hogwarts pet.[5]

Burgock, a goblin who worked at Gringotts Wizarding Bank, suffered from a bronze allergy; for that reason, he made an effort to propose the abolishment of the knut.[6]

On 14 February 1993, Gilderoy Lockhart hired some dwarfs to sing Valentines around Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, dressed as cupids. One of them was allergic to feathers and his fake wings made him itch.[7]

On 8 February 1999, an advertisement for the Society for the Tolerance of Vampires published in the Daily Prophet asked for an applicant to run their head office in London to have an allergy to garlic.[8]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Although Harry Potter canonically has green eyes, Daniel Radcliffe, the actor who portrayed him, has blue eyes. With one exception, Radcliffe did not film scenes with green contact lenses because he was allergic to them.[9]
