Stained glass window

Stained glass windows are windows assembled with glass panels that have been coloured, either by painting or by fusing pigments into its structure.

Hogwarts Castle was built in c. 993, corresponding to the Romanesque and Early Gothic period, when stained glass, as an art form, reached its height. As such, there are various examples of stained glass windows in the main halls of Hogwarts.

The mermaid stained glass window

• In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the portrait of a mermaid in the Prefects' bathroom, is depicted instead as a large stained glass window overlooking the room.
• The stained glass windows depicted in the films show, multi-coloured flashed, opalised and streaky glasses that are not contemporaneous to the establishment of Hogwarts. In fact, detailed polychrome glass painting was only developed in the 19th century.
